My grandfather has been in retirement for three months now but it seems that he unfortunately got the problems he avoided successfully while he was working with dangerous materials. He has skin atrophy on one small part of the arm but it looks like he will be able to heal easily. Is this radiation problem really something that can be dealt easily with?

Well, I assume that depends on the level of the radiation dosage that accumulated through decades of working at such position. But if those minor changes is all that he got, then it looks like safety measures were proper. You should know that radiation accumulates through time, no matter how small the amounts are, they all add up and at one moment they cause some problem. And since he is not working anymore at that spot, after taking care of that injury, he should be ok.
