I had stapendectomies done on both ears in 1972 and 1973. I have had medical conditions in the last 10 years that required MRI's but was told by several radiologists that they could not perform an MRI on me because of the procedure that had been done. My present ENT doctor thinks this is not the case. I have located the doctor who performed the original surgery and he is sending me literature which indicates that the metal used at that time is MRI compatible. I am in another situation requiring an MRI but I am really afraid to go ahead with it considering the conflicting points of view, fearing that I could lose my hearing altogether. Does anybody know for certain if it would be safe for me to undergo an MRI. I would appreciate any help in this matter. thanks much.

I have also had the same issue and I desperately need the MRI.  But the radiologist tells me the same thing.  Mine were in 1991 and 1996.  And the doctor does not keep records past 7 years.  Great...  Have you found out anything?
