The side in which you sleep on can also play a role in your health. Sleeping on the ride side can worsen heartburn. However, sleeping on the left side can put a strain on internal organs like the liver, lungs, and stomach, but also while reducing acid reflux. Pregnant women are advised to sleep on their left side for optimal blood flow.
Vivian Eisenstadt, physical therapist in Los Angeles, Calif., told Medical Daily in an email, “if you’re going to sleep on your side, pillow prop using the following: an ergonomic pillow thick enough so your head doesn’t tilt down, a small pillow under your waist so your stomach doesn’t curve down, and a 3rd pillow between your legs.”

DO NOT TAKE NEXIUM AT BEDTIME! It is extremely important to put food on top of Nexium (esomeprasole) about 30 - 45 minutes after taking it, especially the 40 mg capsule. Best time to take it is on an empty stomach, about 30 - 45 minutes before eating (breakfast or lunch). I've taken this med for about ten years. After two years (daily), I have only needed it about twice a week, 20 mg capsule.

I have the same problem and what you say is very interesting. I also believe it may have something to do with eating late at night before bed.

If it happens only when you breath, it's likely a costochondritis which has to do with inter-costal ligaments/muscles. The condition is not serious at all and has nothing to do with your heart. You may have trained or overstretched your chest- or shoulder-muscles too hard in the past days or may have slept shirtless, which may have teared a part of it. The good news is, it should go away on its own over time. A good treatment is to go sleep with a shirt on and use a hot bottle of water and keep it against your chest. You can take magnesium supplements too until your condition improves. If you smoke, are overweight, dring alcohol or in otherwise extreme cases, a more serious conditions such as pericarditis, which is an infection of the protective layer of the heart, may be considered. Hope it helps.

The side I'm laying on is burning at night. I have to flip sides and the pillow many times a night. What to do to stop this?

I’m a 35 year old female. I’m 5’3” and 125lbs. I sleep on both my side and my back. I switch it up during the night. But I’m having that sternum pain as well. It almost feels like it needs to be stretched out or it needs to pop. Idk what causes it. Does anyone else know? Is it the weight of my body pushing on my sternum when I sleep on my sides? Because I have it on both sides of my sternum. Did some internet research and saw something called costochondritis and it’s an inflammation of the cartilage that connects your ribs to your sternum/breastbone. Not sure if that’s what it is but that’s the closest I’ve come to an answer. If anyone knows for sure please post a reply. I didn’t notice the pain when I woke up but as soon as I got up and started moving I felt the pain. It feels better if I stand up straight or breath deeply. But if I slouch or bring my shoulders in that’s when the pain gets bad. Again, not sure what it is so if anyone knows, please post a reply. Thank you.

Good morning
When you sleep facing right, this is the incorrect position for you stomach. You should sleep on your left side to prevent acid travelling up your oesophagus.
The acid inflames your chest muscles.
One other consideration is your pillows. If you are a side sleeper, but your pillows are not effective, you will sleep on your arm which causes sternum and xiphoid inflammation.
Get new pillows, stop sleeping on your arm, sleep facing left, and if you really want to push it, go on a plant based diet - diary and meat cause additional inflammation.
