My son was taking Centrum multi vitamins and had the same problem you were having. I was going to take him in for testing, but read Centrum vitamins could be the cause so we discontinued them. After he stopped taking them, he never had the shooting pains again. That was 6 months ago.

I have the same problem. Terrible pain in the pit of my stomach that goes through to my back. The kind of pain that you can't function with. You lay there and role, pushing on the pain as hard as you can. Can hardly breathe. Funny thing is, I know exactly what it is. It's the MultiVitimin. I've started taking vitimins again. I take Vitamin D, E, Fish Oil and most recently (yesterday) Vitamins for Women over 50. That was the kicker! Because I've been taking the other's for 7 days straight with no problem, the day I started the multi, the terrible pain. Personally, I think it's the Iron in it. I've never been able to take vitamins that have iron, for it gives me this pain.

The solution - as previously posted, is to take a multivitamin WITHOUT iron. Especially if you're male. You have no reason to take iron. You only need iron if you're anemic (low red cell count). Female may need a little bit due to monthly blood loss. Hope this helps.

I was.... and still having this same problem....that's why I'm here today. I've been doing your number 3...seemed to help, but still some pain and discomfort. Stopped taking on empty stomach a long time ago. Also took AFTER I ate my first meal of the day...never WITH my meal

I do think the benefits outweigh the discomfort...mine always passes over in an hour or so. I do realize that we cannot get all the nutrients we really need In the foods we eat and there is a greater good in taking supplements. I just need to make sure I'm taking the best for my body.

Will try numbers 1 and 2 and see how that works for me!

Thanks a lot for sharing!

This was helpful for me:
Multivitamins provide the nutrients you would normally get from foods, and can offset the effects of poor dietary nutrition. Stomach upset is a common multivitamin side effect, however. The severity of the stomach upset may vary from mild nausea to severe cramping and could occur within minutes of ingestion. Although an upset stomach from multivitamins is common, you can avoid or reduce the severity of the problem by taking your vitamins with food.
STEP 1

Choose a multivitamin without iron, unless directed otherwise by your doctor. Multivitamins with iron are more likely to cause an upset stomach.

STEP 2

Eat something starchy, such as toast, or something with protein, such as eggs. Avoid eating dairy products, which may prevent you from absorbing all of the vitamins in your multivitamin.
STEP 3

Add a liquid multivitamin to a glass of juice or water. Adding it to a beverage will dilute the component vitamins and reduce the risk of stomach upset.
THINGS YOU'LL NEED

Food
Juice
TIPS

If your multivitamin still causes stomach upset, consider trying a different brand or taking individual supplements instead of a multivitamin.

I've been suffering from the same pain after taking my daily dose of Wellmans with my main meal. However, I've noticed that if I drink a full glass of water with the pill, I experience no pain.

There were 2 times I ever started taking multivitamins in my life, and both times I had to stop due to problems. The first time was when I took the Costco Multivitamin many years ago; it gave me stomach cramps and later caused diarrhea so I ended up stopping. The second time was recently with the Nature's Way Alive Max Potency; since I remembered taking the normal multivitamin with Costco many years ago, I got the one where it was diluted to 6 a day, and I felt fine for the next few days- actually it helped me get more energy. The problems started surfacing after around a week of using this- the lower right side of my stomach felt a bit...cramped, but I didn't really think about it. After a few more days though, the cramps started getting worse where I felt a burning, soreness on the right side. Seeing as how the only thing I changed in my life were the multivitamins, I've stopped taking them, and sure enough, the cramped soreness went away after a few days. Guess my body isn't made for multivitamins. Back to eating fresh fruits and vegetables it is!
