Like I have said before look up the Trans Geminal nerve on google, that is what appears to be the nerve fireing off, and scaring the xxxx out of most of us. I have had two MRI's of the head and talking a couple times with a neurologist, they find NOTHING. They say if it stays around too long and too frequent then they dont want to, but they can put you on seizure medicine. My biggest problem is I have been dealing with this since 1976, once a day, every third day, once a week, sleeping or stressed it never really matters, but the worse part is it always leaves me thinking with some anxiety for a few minutes, "is this the big one" because if it last for than just a couple seconds if even that, I couldnt tell you what I would do to terminate the pain.

Delighted to hear nothing showed up and that it's nothing serious , u write the exact same things I'm thinking ! Everytime I get a dart in my head I think " oh god is this gonna make me collapse " is this d big one! Everyone keeps telling me oh ur just stressed! Which drives me mad as it don't matter if I'm totally relaxed or really stressed it just comes on randomly ! Hopefully it will b ok , I'm gonna google that now , thank you, take care .

Sure is amazing that after 16 pages of post there is no defined answer to what we are all suffering. I came back to this page today after I just google the type of head pain to see if there was a different site, guess not. Feeling for or five of these lately and back on the internet to find out why. All I seem to be doing lately is drinking more Propel Water, but how could that have anything to do with anything. Sure wish someone had a small answer to this. It SUCKS and ruins my whole day when a flurry of these jolts come in and MRI's etc. say nothing is wrong.

I have the same, infrequent but SUPER annoying and painful burst of sharp, tingling pain (like lightning) down the right side of my head. It feels like it's just under the skin and it travels from the top of my head down past my ear to my neck. I am 26, fairly healthy and active. I have had this since my teens. It's something called Neuralgia, which is just a nerve channel that had been disrupted or damaged for a number of reasons.  The reason it goes away seems to be that it heals up. I feel it comes on especially when I've had a bad night sleep and I wake up with tension in my shoulders. For me personally, I don't believe it's anything life threatening, just the body's reaction to some minor unseen trauma. I try and treat it with rest, plenty of plain water, vitamins, and stretching. Good luck everyone.

Funny that you mention the Neuralgia, since as of the past couple days I have come to exactly that same conclusion entirely. After an accident 30 years ago with about 50 stiches over the right side of my forehead, it makes sense to me that just through that bump the periodic jolt of lightning pain does sound like nerve damage. Over the past month the pain went from once in a while to 10 to 15 times a day, that happend last year for about a month then it went away. 3 MRi's over 10 years, negative anything.

So I think that the answer were all looking for is just simply Neuralgia. All the causes and symptoms line up to this being it. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0002380/

Been massaging the area over the scar over the past day after trying everything, seems that for some reason I have settled down the never and been almost 24 hours without a jolt. Funny that if it were in any other part of your body, it wouldnt seem like something that scared the xxxx out of you so much. But have been told by numerous medical professionals, "dont worry its NOT live threatening".

Be sure and cut and past the link above to google, that will take you to the National Library of Medicine.  Tells it ALL!

I also get these sharp pains in my head, however they are never on just one side, left or right. To the age comment about getting old, I am only 20, so this still has me concerned. I do not get pain in my ear or shoulders when this happens, just the top of my head, to the left or right, and only for about 3-15 sec, then its gone. When it happens, (thank god i have not been driving), I stop what im doing, can can just hold my head for a minute. Ok don't know what else to say..lol bye

Is it a bad sign if a young teen gets these pains? I have been having a sharp pain from the top right side of my head to the back. Sometimes the side changes. When it is a sharp pain, sometimes my eye twitches. Should my mom take me to a dr is basically what I am wondering.

OMG! I have the same thing happen to me. The doctor says its my imagination. I have gone through this for years. I hear a pop sound and it feels like some one stabbed me with a knife it hurts so bad. I think it happens when I turn my neck. No telling when it is going to happen. I cant see for a split second. not sure if it is because I close my eyes in pain. after it happens then it feels like my brain is bleeding. when it happens it is likely to happen throughout the day. I can not shake my head ever any day. If I get jogged my brain hurts. Like to say "no" fast shaking my head back and forth, i I feel like my brain is smashing against my skull.

What you two are describing here, just go through the process of MRI, not that big of a deal for 45 minutes of laying there with weird sound going on in the background, then when the results come out, you can relax about this and move on.

most of the time it is found in men.  There are cluster headaches but they usually start behind the eye and have a piercing pain that goes straight to the back of the head.  They last anywhere from 20-30 minutes and fade away.  However, it could be many pains.  if you have sinus issues it is near the mastoid bone.  that bump right behind the ear.  sometimes you get irregular air bubbles around that bone and it responds with a sharp pain on the side that is affected.  It can be the start of a sinus infection or just bad allergies or sinuses.  However, because they are one sided and could be migraines, I agree with Talcott.  You need to have an MRI.  It will differentiate between the mastoid bone or whether it is migraines or something else.  The head is nothing to mess with.  I had a stroke at birth and have dealt with seizures.  I had a right temporal lobectomy and other junk.  I am sure it is nothing like that but you do need to see a doctor to rule out anything serious.  It could also be that you are grinding your teeth and that will give you pain in the side of the mouth that is affected the most.  A simple mouthguard will fix that.  Do not think the worst but definitely get it checked out.

When I was a kid, I would experience something very similar.  A sharp pain somewhere towards the top of my head, it would spread like a spider web and then be gone within a minute or less.  My mom took me to every specialist and all they came up with was an ocular migraine.  My 4 year old was playing this morning and grabbed his head on the right side and said "Ow" and said his head felt wrinkley.  It immediately made me think of those "snaps" in my head.  I out grew mine but it makes me nervous that he had that sensation.

I have logged on to this just now because I've only recently started getting the pains as described by most of the people on this site.  A sharp unexpected pain shooting on the right side of my head, it is very painful and worrying and I do hold my hand over it to try and ease it.  For me I suspect it is stress related as I'm a naturally anxious person and have recently started a stressful job which I undertake in the evenings at home.  However, what's adding to my worries is that my dad recently had a stroke and there had been no signs leading up to this that there was anything wrong with him, he had a headache during the day and the next thing we knew he was being rushed to hospital in the evening.  Sadly he passed away and what I remember of him in hospital was that he couldn't shake his headache.  Now when I get pains in my head I can't help worrying that it's something more sinsister, hopefully and now having read the comments here I'll be able to be more relaxed about it.

I do think it is stress related and I think the advice about soothing music etc, is great.  For me I think I can put it down to my job and I am contemplating handing in my notice as I'm taking calls for a care agency and am on tenterhooks the entire time waiting for the phone to ring!
