I've been getting stabbing pains in the left side of my head for a few months now.  they only last a few seconds and sometimes i'll only have one or sometimes it's a flurry.  i found this site that has described my symptoms almost exactly and they are called idiopathic stabbing headache (ISH).

I'm 16 and have been experiencing these pains that alot of you have described but tonight was out of the ordinary. The pains slowly made its way up the back of my head and the shooting pains have been going for a good 2 hours now, making my vision blurry along the way. It's beginning to feel extremely numb. I get it every so often but never as bad as this. I'm beginning to worry.

I have been having the same stabbing pains. It just started today but it didn't really hurt that much. I am 17 years old and am terrified that I might possibly have a brain tumor or maybe even something far more horrible.

amazing how many have this issue. In 75 had auto accident been experiencing this ever since periodically. Mri shows nothing, scares the living sht out of me never know its coming and never new what hit me when its gone, only lasts a few seconds if not shorter. Get anxious after it hits after all these years for a few minutes, sometime once a week, month, day, anytime but naver have gotten use to it.

I have experienced the shooting pain behind the ear and towards the back of the head before and its happening today.  Mine was due to an infected tooth. The tooth was bothering me a week ago but stopped and now I have this pain.  The infection travels through your glands and causes shooting pains as if you were being tazzed.  Sometimes its short and sometimes longer.  Can't help but twitch when it happens.  Bottom line you need an antibiotic and you need to get a checkup by the dentist.

Interesting since my wife suggested that from the beginning.  My update is this, went to nuerologist, and ent on friday.  They both after discussion and further investigation said that nothing is wrong with me, go figure.  Endoscope into my sinus found that my sinus after all these years of thinking I had sinusitus showed a perfect sinus cavity and zero signs of nothing.  Here is what we all came up with, as a result of nerve damage from accident in 75 that left forehead scar, neuralgia or nerve damage became evident.  Certain issues can cause the nerve to flare up cause intense sever sharp head pains.  By the way went to the specialists last week since I was getting about 20 jolts of pain for about 5 days straight, far unusual for the periodic bits of pain over the year.

Here is what the issues last week were that probably was causing the pain since the sharp pains have since subsided. Stress, Flonase (3 times as much as was perscribed for about 3 or 4 days) and the need for new glasses.  I received a new eye glass perscription about a year ago and didnt like the new glasses so put them in the drawer for about a year, just pulled them out on Wednesday and they work just fine.  I really believe since the severe every few hours sharp jolting pain above the right temple for 5 days all but disappeared, it had to be mostly related to my eyes.  Hope this helps somebody.

I get short sharp shooting pains in the back of my head from time to time and it'll be every so many seconds for a bit of time , had no idea what it was until my grandmother said she had neuralgia and I asked her what it was and she described the same thing . I looked it up and this sounds like it OCCIPITAL NEURALGIA kinda nothing you can do about it but google it.

Last time this happened to me (sharp, shooting pains starting near my right ear and shooting toward my temple about once every 2-5 minutes), it turned out I had Lyme disease.  It's worth being tested, especially if you spend time an areas with a lot of deer.  The Northeast is infamous for Lyme.  I just started having the pains again, so to the doctor to be tested tomorrow I go.

Hey all, I'm a doctor from the U.K that specialises in head problems. This post is clearly old, but for people who are discovering this post looking for a easy solution, their is not one.
This shooting pain can be one of two things.
If you occasionally suffer from Migraines than this can be what's called an "obsurf" Of a migraine, which is sporadic, and random time shooting pains to the side of the head. This is normally passed down from your Grandparents (It skips a generation) so I urge you to contact them before doing the next step.
The other thing which I'm sorry to tell you, but I'm sure you'd rather know than not, This a form of brain cancer. The shooting pain, is where the tumour is preventing the blood from flowing round your brain, and then the pressure getting to great so the blood rushes through, and that's what causes the pain!

If you can't contact your relative. ***this post is edited by moderator *** *** private e-mails not allowed*** Please read our Terms of Use

I'm 16 years old and I have been having these sharp pains in my head too. I remember 2 years ago I had these pains for the first time. I really hope it's just a headache and not something worse. I just would really like to have reassurance that it's nothing too awful. I'm terrified of doctors so I refuse to go. But the pain is very sharp and it can be on either side. The pain has no preference to the time of day, and sometimes it'll be once a day. Or sometimes it'll be once a month. I have no idea when it's coming. I can either be out running or sitting on the couch. I really would LOVE answers. Thank you.

Hello, I am a 23 year old female who just came across this forum because I was coming up the stairs and got (another) shooting pain that started on the left side of the back of my neck, came up the back of my head and then continued from my left brow bone through my left temple to my left ear. I have a 3 year old son and over the past 3 years, I have noticed all sorts of different shooting pains, sudden headaches, etc. I pretty much summed it up to the stresses of being the mother of a very active toddler, taking care of a household and being on the computer a lot. However, I am still freaked out. A friends mom passed away 2 years ago from a brain tumor and every time that I get a headache or a shooting pain, I cannot help but worry that someday, I might find out that all of the symptoms have been warning me of something more serious than stress. I do remember getting random throbbing pains in my temples when I was pregnant with my son. I was still working then (Lots of bending, etc.) and when I asked my doctor about them, she said it was from the bending and that I needed a good massage and some relaxation. Over the past 3 years, I've noticed all of these other
random pains...
