I am a 57 yr old female. Mine doesn't happen at night. I am just sitting, reading or watching TV. I also get a severe cramp in the middle of my stomach from right to left. I've had an endoscopy and x-rays of my stomach and there's nothing wrong. I do take meds. But just now I was reading and got sudden fluid in my mouth and didn't even make it to the bathroom and threw up 4 times in the trash. I feel fine now. This happens 2 or maybe 3 times a week. I had an emergency hysterectomy 10 years ago. My dad says it's allergy's, but I don't feel anything running down my throat. I am a vegetarian. At this point, I'm afraid to eat anything! If anyone else is having something like this, please post.

He is more often than not hospitalised and place on an IV. Within a day or two (or sometimes more) he’s better.
For years and years we were unsure what the condition was until they labelled it as CVS (Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome). They’re unsure of a cure.

Me too. I'm a 12 year old male. I woke up at 2 and so did my mom. We both threw up 3-4 times. Maybe CVS?

I'm a 32 year old female and have had insane episodes of vomiting for the last 20 years and was throwing up often before that. I have woken up over probably over 500 times in the middle of the night and have stayed up violently vomiting for up to 3 days. The best course of action I have figured out to take is hot baths (which very often I wake up in), but if I time everything just right after the first few episodes of throwing up, laying in a hot bath with a cold wet wash cloth to put on my head (to avoid not overheating) and then moving to bed to pass out from exhaustion. Usually I have to do that 2 or 3 times sleeping a few hours each time that way I can sleep long enough that my stomach isn't as stressed. Then I can sometimes wake up and try to get some Sprite (with ice) down and be able to eat some Campbell's Cream of Chicken soup slowly.
For nearly 20 years I have had to leave events/parties early because my stomach hurts. Trips out of town have usually ended up with either throwing up the whole drive back home or through the two connecting flights and layover. I have spent an entire vacation week visiting family in their guest bed and bathroom taking baths and throwing up. I have lost jobs, I have avoided many situations due to how this affects me. Over the two decades that I have been dealing with this I have explained it as a stomach ache but have assumed a combination of ideas that it could be: IBS, Lactose, Gluten, Crohn's, a gene that produces too much bile (as I was advised by a family member who was diagnosed with that back in the day), Alcohol related, stress related and so on. I have had to completely change my life on a constant basis due to this horrific illness. There have also been times that I thought I was diabetic because I get faint and dizzy and feel like my blood sugar is off so after I snack on something appropriate I feel better.
WELL... I HOPE THAT THIS CAN AT LEAST HELP ONE OF YOU!!! I was watching The Resident and they mentioned Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome... it immediately got my attention and had to Google it. HOLY CR##!!! I started reading forums and found myself just crying. I suppose I could even say that I felt like I was able to see for the first time. Literally every feeling and disorder that I had through I had is all related to this one syndrome. I never thought I would cry tears of happiness reading that I am not the only one that spends 12+ hours on the bathroom floor in a coma crying and dry heaving with exhaustion. I also never thought I would enjoy reading a blog and comments about how other people are having bowel issues simultaneously with vomiting. It's gross but ya know.... it's also freaking amazing to know that you aren't the alone.
My last visit to the ER they did not mention CVS but they did suggest Cannabinoid Hyperemesis syndrome, since I am a Medicinal Patient I was upfront but I felt like with them hearing that I smoke plus that I have to take hot baths to feel better they originally put me into that CHS category. I tried to explain that I was like this for a decade before I started smoking and if I don’t have anything on hand even for a month or so that entire month I will be sick. From my readings most people that have CVS use medicinal marijuana in some form. I honestly don’t think I would be alive if I didn’t because if I can’t smoke while going through an episode that episode will not end. Now it’s not like I’m playing Cheech & Chong, but just one hit and it basically tells my stomach to chill… relax… please stop puking! I read on a forum where everyone was discussing how it helps and one lady said that her doctor had told her she had Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome and she had stopped smoking but she was just getting worse, and her episodes were putting her into the ER each month. This is one of those cases like I had experienced in the ER where they just put you in that category without thinking of other options. That’s what I have learned with CVS… even though countless medical bills to Doctors, GI Specialists & ER they have basically told me “nope we don’t see what’s wrong” or IBS, Crohn’s etc. It’s hard to be diagnosed but I realized when I read up on it (initially took me googling “Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome”) and the first link listed out EVERYTHING that I have felt, experienced or dealt with.
The more and more I read about CVS everything that I have been doing through trial and error makes sense. There isn’t a cure but between lifestyles, medicine and knowing what your triggers are and the phases of each episode you can drastically reduce/prevent an episode early. Think of it like taking a Zicam at the very first sign of getting sick and being able to change the course of a cold vs. having to endure the cold for it’s full length.
From what I have read specialists will often prescribe either individually or a combination of the following: Stomach medicine, Migraine Medicine, Anti-depressants and pain medication. Basically, making it sound like your stomach is a person in it’s own. Think about it… does the stress of holidays or travelling just really mess your stomach up? Well… that is where the Anti-depressant/anxiety medication comes in. Those hot baths or smoking marijuana help? That’s just another way of calming your stressed stomach… breathing exercises (even while in the bath can help). You know that feeling where it feels like someone has your insides in a vice grip? They call that an Abdominal Migraine. Do you often have headaches or neck pain around when the episode is occurring… makes sense now? I used to try to drink water and sprite shortly after each throwing up episode because I was so dehydrated I didn’t want to get to the dry heaving an bile stage because that is the worst… hell someone please kill me. Then I started doing what those mean ER docs due…. If you throw up they won’t let you have any liquids for 3 hours… started forcing myself to do this at home and IT HELPS!!! Otherwise you might be like me where 2 days have gone by, you can’t even stand, you’ve used every towel in the house either because of baths or because you’re so weak on the floor that all you can do is throw up into the towel.
This syndrome was originally just found in children but over time they have started doing research on adults that are dealing with it as well. The more and more research I do I see how they just didn’t know when I was a kid. Instead I used to get in trouble because after lunch in Elementary school I would be in the Nurse’s office throwing up or just a stomach ache and I was scolded for “trying to avoid class”. It isn’t an exact genetic disorder but Maternal Inheritance of Migraines can cause the child to have CVS. So now I am telling my Dad because my 18 year old brother has sinus drainage that causes him to get sick to his stomach and I don’t want him to miss out on the opportunities that I missed out on in every day life because I had to stay home because I was throwing up. So to all of you that are like me and physically, mentally and emotionally exhausted from waking up around 3 or 4am to throw up violently please… PLEASE look into Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome. Even without a cure and only treatment to avoid… being able to see that you aren’t alone feels so good. Last thing…. I’m the Queen of Googling EVERYTHING right? I have been googling exact conditions, and apparently I should have been googling “Worst Vomiting Syndrome” this ENTIRE TIME.
I wish you all good luck and I hope that this can help!
