My Dad's left ankle has been swelling and he has pain in the back of his left calf. He went to a clinic last night and the Dr could not feel any blood clots. He had no clue as to what this could be. He drew blood but won't have results for a few days. Any ideas? He is a diabetic and is 77 years old.

I question his doctor's judgment. Blood clots cannot be felt with the bare hands. Your dad has all the signs of deep vein thrombosis. More extensive testings need to be done to rule out DVT. Aspirin therapy may help thin the blood and dissolve any blood clots that may have already formed. Graduated compression sock may help reduce the swelling on his ankle. In the meantime, keep a close watch on him. Your dad's life is still in grave danger.
