Hi! I just read your paragraph "What happens is your brain gets used to the "new" taste.." & it was like you were typing what I was trying to explain to my husband tonight but couldn't! It has been almost a month for me without taste & I have begun to do this .. Almost tricking myself into thinking for just a second that maybe it's coming back! & then quickly realizing that chocolate is NOT supposed to taste like that.
May I ask .. Any improvements for you since your last post?? I'm feeling hopeless after just a month.

It's officially been a year for me as of Thanksgiving time. I feel that it's has gotten somewhat better but I still have no flavor perception, as if my tongue doesn't work and I can only identify something once I swallow it. I've been to probably 8 doctors and no breakthroughs. One told me it could take a year and a half so maybe it will be back around June. It's been awful but don't give up hope! I will update if anything changes.

I posted on here a while back about my taste after my tonsillectomy. Well it's now been ten months and it is no better today than it was ten weeks post op. I keep being told by the doctors to "just wait". I'm sick of waiting, I want some sort of help. I've tried so many different things to no avail. Very depressing!!!

In the UK my ENT specialist was very clear that taste malfunction was a possibility with the operation. He said that the clamp used to open the mouth can damage taste buds on the tongue. For me the alteration happened once the holes at the back of my mouth started filling with new tissue (week 3). In have a dry feeling in the back of my throat and things taste bitter. I had my tonsils removed because there was a possibly cancerous lump in one of them and they needed to biopsy it. Im getting the results today. I really hate the impact on my taste but I am much happier that the lump is gone.
I hope that peoples taste returns or becomes more bearable. Maybe you could eat things you didnt like before now. I suppose not getting enjoyment from food that is bad for us is a good thing and could help with weight loss.

I had surgery in April and it August and I can no longer drink juice or margaritas iacidic and sour taste metallic. They said maybe steroids. I am glad I read this. It's not worth the risk for me. Going to have a conversation with my dr.
Prayers for you. I hope things are better for you! Post an update if you check back.

Hi everyone, I am 2 weeks post tonsillectomy and feeling almost fully recovered only that I have this horrible taste in my mouth when I eat. Sweet foods and chocolates are the worst but even normal foods aren't tastjng too good. I just hope this doesn't last for too long because my sweet tooth doesn't know what's happening

Yes, i have all the problems you describe. I had surgery on 12/12/16 and nothing tastes the same. The first bite starts out tasting good, but quickly tastes metallic or sour. Hoping it goes away soon. I'm also worried if the taste in my mouth is so sour, my breath must be terrible.

It's been two weeks since my tonsillectomy and during the first week all the popsicles and ice tea I was having tasted normal but when decided I was ready to actually eat solids i realized I couldn't taste sweetness anymore. Other foods taste a little dull but they still taste good I can still enjoy chicken soup for example. But when I eat or drink something sweet( except for what I'll mention later) I can sense a little bit of flavor during the first second but then it disappears completely not even leaving an after taste. Something really weird is that I can't even taste the sweetness in Coca-Cola but for some reason I can still taste sweetness in my home made fruit drinks, ice tea and popsicles I ate during my first week of recovery. I've read zinc has helped some people with the same post tonsillectomy taste loss problem but I was wondering if anyone has seen improvement smoking cannabis.

J,
I know your post was written a year ago but I felt compelled to reply. I'm 6 days post op & have had this disgusting bitter taste in my mouth for a couple of days now. It is truly hideous & no matter what I eat or drink that's all I can taste. It's getting me down more than the pain because I just can't get rid of it.
I'm really sorry to hear of your experience & hope you've managed to get some taste sensations back x

I also had mine out in mid may and yr are correct nothing taste good, I still have a very bitter taste all the time, I also had sinus surgery and the removal of uvula at same time so I don't know what is causing it. I asked Dr agai. Last week and he said salivary glands are close to where tonsils were so possible they were addicted during surgery. He said it could take a year for things to get back to normal. Don't know if it cured sleep problem. I have a friend that it did not help. I sure hope all the pain was for nothing. WOrse pain I have ever endured worse that both knees and both breast being removed . Only positive thing was lost 23 pounds in two weeks.

Hello, I’m 3 1/2 months post op. I’m having similar issues with my taste. My taste was fine up until about 2 1/2- 3 weeks after my scabs disappeared.
My taste is wonky! That’s not the worse part, I have a salty/bitter stingy taste/sensation in my mouth 24/7. It started salty and changed over the course of the 3 1/2 months.
Did your situation ever improve? If so, when? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
