Hi. I went to see my dentist because of a toothache. I can`t chew very well because it hurts. I was diagnosed with tooth abscess and prescribed with some antibiotics and pain killers. I would like to hear more about tooth abscess. What is that and what could be the cause of my problem?

Hi. Tooth abscess is a complication of decay - it is a bacterial infection of the center of a tooth. That is why you were prescribed with antibiotics, to fight the infection. I had the same problem 2 months ago and I have found warm salt-water rinses to be very soothing. It is important not to place aspirin directly over the tooth because of possible irritation of the tissue. Causes of tooth abscess are tooth decay and trauma to the tooth.
