I’m on inderal because of hbp. I’m 50 and this is my the first hbp med. As I know beta blockers are not helpful in hbp management in elderly people. My elder brother that is 60 is still on toprol. As I know it is also beta blocker. I’d like to know the difference between these two meds, toprol versus Inderal.

Both toprol and inderal are beta blockers, toprol is metoprolol and inderal is propranolol generically. Their mechanism of action is blocking beta receptors in heart and blood vessels, and adrenaline and noradrenaline bind on them. These medications have same indications and same contraindications. They act in the same way, only difference is dodage form, so 1mg of inderal is not the same as 1mg of toprol and that way these two meds can not be replaced. And XL forms especially.
