Uncorrectable vision loss can be caused by various reasons. In yours mother age the most common is "senile macular degeneration" or "age-related macular degeneration" as it is called now. There is currently no way to prevent the development of this. You can try with some vitamins (A, C and E) and minerals (zinc, copper, and selenium). Most important is to teach her and yourself how to live in new conditions.
