There are two types of packs (in general) the 21-day pack and the 28-day pack. They are both, when taken everyday around the same time, and when used as directed and not taking medications that cause them to be ineffective, are generally something like 98% effective and highly reliable. But they are only as reliable as the person who takes them--if you take them as directed they will not fail, but if you fail to take them they may not protect you.

The only difference between the 21 and 28-day pack is that when the person taking the 21-day pack gets to the 21st pill or the last pill in their pack, they wait 7 days before starting a new pack. However, the person taking the 28-day pack keeps on taking their pack until the last pill is gone and then starts a new pack without skipping any days. The last week of a 28-day pack generally contains no contraceptive medication--in other words, what is in that last week is **not** birth control at all, it is just a sugar pill that keeps you in the habit of taking a pill a day, because the routine of taking a pill a day is so important and breaking that routine, for many people might contribute to forgetting to take the pill during the first 21 days, when it contains contraceptive medication.

Put simply: it doesn't really matter if you take the last week of your birthcontrol or not, because it doesn't contain any birthcontrol. There are no hormones in the last week because that is the week designed for your period to come. It is the break week, so to speak, and if you've taken your pills all month, just as you were directed, you will not get pregnant, as promised by the prescription label. If you miss some pills during the first 21 days of your pack, however, you **can** get pregnant, but the last 7 days mean nothing unless not taking all 28 of your pills makes you forget to start a new pack, and then you may have a different problem.
