About to remove my ureteral stent in about 30 minutes.....I'm terrified BUT I KNOW I'll feel SO much better afterwards.

A few helpful hints: after watching my fiancé in horrible pain with kidney stones blocking both kidneys and emergency surgery and his first set of stents we where sent home with self removal stents. 3 weeks later and as any kidney stoner knows your life stops. It was finally time to remove them, no guidance from the dr, except "pull them out", I was also terrified. He was mortified. I searched the web, and we got through it with these wonderful tips.
Take your pain medication at least 1hour prior
If you have a zanax or adavan take one 40 mins prior.
Keep your bladder full
Get into a warm shower, start a nice urine flow and pull firmly in a downward ( towards your knees) wrap the string around your finger once so it doesn't slip. Keep a steady pull. It takes a second to see the stent, but when you do and it's blue, it's almost out.
He had no pain, however, he felt a little light headed. He head immediate releif. Good luck!

Thank you so much for going ahead and posting! I came across the original post googling stent removals as I've never done it myself. I wondered about the pain, perhaps a bath and taking a pain pill. You have put me at ease about the whole thing. I imagine you've helped others also! Thank again!!

removed stent myself this morning by pulling out with the string. After much worry and concern about pain associated with doing this, I pulled it out in the shower. It took 20 seconds and zero pain. Hardly felt it at all. I can't believe it was this easy and pain free.

Hey there...Glad to hear so many people had little pain removing their stints. I took tramadol before removing mine. the removal went fine. I took meds about an hour before and then got a warm bath. While in tub i removed the stent pulling firmly and steadily. It felt strange and hurt a bit. About 10-15 after the stent was out i was in terrible pain...took more pain meds...waited for 30-40 min and then went to ER. Apparently my Kidney had went into spasms which is not unusual. It felt like i was passing a stone again. They dosed me up with 2mg dilaudid intravenously and released me a couple hours after i was admitted. Just another side of the story from another kidney stoner. Hope you all feel better and soon!

After stewing about this for three days and reading these responses I took the plunge. Turned out to be no big deal. I took a Vicodin and a Clonopin about 30 minutes before doing it. Got in a hot shower, started pulling the string, and stent was out before I knew it. Less than 15 seconds. No pain. Just a weird feeling.

Just had 2 stones lasered and vacuumed out. Had a stent since last Frida, April 28th, 2017. All kinds of different stories on net, some of which made me very apprehensive. Pulled it out yesterday, May 3rd with NO pain or problems at all. Been 16 hours and I do not even have a hint of blood in my urine. Also, labs at beginning showed my eGFR had dropped to 25.....very concerning. Everything I read said that stones would not effect eGFR level. Even before actually blasting, a follow up should a bounce back to 45.....hoping for full rebound.

I found this board looking for what to expect when I took mine out today and it was soo beyond helpful. Thank you so much for posting! I took a pain pill 30 mins before and tried to pull it out sitting on the toilet, but there was too much pain and burning. I waited another half hour and sat in a hot bath and it was so much easier. Just a little tug and it slide out. Still a bit painful/discomfort, but nothing like before and nothing I couldn't handle. It's actually more shocking how long it is and how that was in your body. When you get anxious, just remember you'll feel so much better with it out than with it still in.

AWESOME! Glad you said it was easier than you thought. I have to pull mine out on Monday 6/26. I have not had any pain with my stent, just some pressure like a UTI. No where near what a kidney stone feels like. I was going to try and pull it out in the shower. I plan on taking either my naproxen, ibuprofen, or percocet. I have read that you should take pain meds approximately 60-90 minutes prior to removing the stent. Thank you for the positivity.

I am terrified too, it's making me insane thinking about it. I'm afraid I'm going to puncture something!
