Hi. I`ve been reading something about AIDS. I know there is no cure, but I was curious about the treatment. How is it treated? What AIDS drugs are there?

Hi. Unfortunately, there is no cure for AIDS. However, meds can slow the progress of AIDS and allow you live longer. Therapy aims to suppress viral load, restore immune function and reduce mortality. Meds used to treat AIDS are called antiretrovirals. There are 4 types of meds used to treat HIV. They include RTIs (reverse transcriptase inhibitors), protease and fusion inhibitors and nucleotide analogs. HIV specialists determine when to start AIDS treatment and what regimen is the best. There are meds, such as Combivir, Epivir and Sustiva, which wait for FDA approval.
