I have an individual who has breathing problems often causing pneumonia. She is disabled and sedentary, always either in her wheelchair, her recliner or her bed. she has been on oral prednisone for 2 years and has gained 30 lbs around the mid-section. I am looking for the pros and cons of the prednisone treatment.

Prednisone is anti-inflammatory medication used for treatment of numerous conditions despite the side effects it almost always causes, especially when used for long periods of time. Prednisone doesn’t only cause weight gain, it always causes a redistribution of body fat, particularly to the face, back of the neck, and stomach. But, stopping prednisone treatment requires some serious re-consideration because our body develops a tolerance for prednisone. Suddenly stopping prednisone can cause withdrawal symptoms, so if a person suddenly stops the use of prednisone he can go into shock. That is why you need to consult with the specialist to see if taking prednisone brings more harm than benefit.
