What do you think of them? I heard a commercial today for them and thought, "That is the lazy way out of reading."

Are the American people that lazy that they can't even read a book now?

I have never listened to one (I prefer to listen to music). My friend and his wife do a lot of travelling by car together, and they really enjoy listening to them. They are both readers, so I wouldn't call them lazy. I guess you can equate it to listening to the old radio shows, as opposed to watching television...

I find I tend to zone out when listening to one and then I miss key parts, so I don't normally use them, although I did try one on a long road trip once. Like Monk, I prefer music for all occasions. I'd have to agree on the old radio show analogy--I used to think the same thing, koby, that it was just laziness, like everything else automating our society has created, but maybe it really is just a throwback to the "old days." Hard to say--there are valid arguments for both viewpoints.

When I do read, which isn't as often as I'd like with school, I definitely prefer the paper version though, and I don't like e-books either. And I always like to read a book before I go see the movie, if there is one. The imagery in the book is much better when it's created in your own mind's conception.

Never heard one before, but if I travelled a lot (in the car) it might be a good way to pass the time.

I don't think it necessarily lazy, just a different way to get some reading in

Here is another question, if you are listening to it on a tape, is it really reading?

Sure, just in a different medium.
Plus audio related stuff is used to help kids learn to read

It's a great way to get kids/people to strengthen their listening skills. This is a big  for your auditory learners. It's important to be able to listen and comprehend what's being read aloud. Hence the reason for your teachers read aloud to you as a child. First it starts with picture books (where a visual picture helps the learner with comprehension) and second on to chapter books (where the learner has to comprehend by using all auditory skills).
It's not reading...no. However, it's a crucial element in learning and comprehension.

With 3 kids the Harry Potter audio books were sanity savers during
our drive to Cape Cod this past summer.
