Hi, my father is 72 years old and I must admit that I am afraid for his health. He has been having some problems with the stool (blood in it!) and he mentioned that he feels some pain in the lower abdominal and anal area. So we have scheduled a digital rectal examination and I am afraid that he might have BHP. What is a prostate like in BHP during digital rectal examination?

Well, you should wait for the results before starting worrying. It might be something quite more benign than BHP. As for the procedure itself, if there is some serious problem, the prostate would be very firm and hard, even magnified a bit. And the procedure would be a bit painful if there is something going on, but I guess it is necessary in order to determine the true cause of his problems.

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).Many men over 40 get it. the prostate grows, and makes it difficult to urinate. I'm not aware of any bloody stool symtoms, so by all means get him checked!
