I too have the same conditions... Ears will pop and crackle several times a minute - Usually triggered by all jaw, tongue, neck movements & swallowing and yawning, and frequently occurs with no movement at all, I could be perfect still but they still POP! Argh It's been 4 years of this non stop including extreme sensitivity to sound ALL SOUND and has gotten to the point that any noise I hear from my surroundings cause me to become extremely anxious and have been showing indications of being paranoid for over a year now due to the fact that the sounds set me off and I believe It could be me. This is A extremely vexing struggle, And Yes it is comforting to know others experience it but I am very glad not EVERYONE does other wise we would be living in a society of verryyy highly strung individuals haha. Doctors and health professionals seem to be no help what so ever and as I am constantly cleaning my ears as I'm almost certain they are completely blocked at times and I do experience some relief from using a diluted 3% Hydrogen Peroxide ear cleanse, the relief is only short term and gets rid of the pressure for a bit but makes my hearing even more precise. So have been looking into self healing therapy. The power of the mind is our ultimate strength, So have focused on healing positive thoughts being directed at my ears and all the mental stress that has come along with it haha....have found that to be the best help. Positive thinking ha who would have known! So lets all just all relax, it's alright, we are all different and every human is going through a similar thing we just only ever confess to it on internet message boards. But am interested In what studies could be conducted with the symptoms we are alll experiencing, It's seems to be relatively unknown in the scientific world. Also as a end note sound therapy with pink noise and other healing frequencies have been successful in treatment for others but I believe it's a essential component whilst undergoing it to re route your brain and re train it to interpret and react to what you are experiencing positively. After all we are human and no one is perfect : )

hi bettyboop1272, Sounds like you have a Eustachian tube dysfunction and Hyperacusis. The Eustachian tube's function is to equalize the pressure of the outer and middle ear. The Eustachian tube is connected to the middle ear (behind the ear drum) to the back of the nasal-pharynx. This tube may not open properly or it may be blocked which could due to swelling. This dysfunction could explain why your ears are constantly popping as the pressure is not equalized. Moving the jaw/mouth and swallowing will cause the Eustachian tube to open this is probably the time your ears pop and you can hear very quiet sounds and become sensitive to very quiet sounds. Hyperacusis is a sensitivity to loud sounds. I know my reply is coming very late to your query but my suggestion would be to visit an Audiologists over an ENT Dr and as for the ears being too clean?? i don't see how this would cause the ears to pop. There isn't a single treatment for Eustachian tube dysfunctions but i have heard of a relatively new procedure which involves a balloon being inserted into the Eustachian tube to dilate thus helping equalize the pressure. Hope this helped. Audiologist in the making.

my ears stay popped when im talking. but this usually happens after i dont eat enough ( i think from chewing and swallowing). they stay popped for days so i try to chew gum constantly and this helps just a bit but i find eatting is what cures it. Also during the month of Ramadan is extremely difficult for me because this is when this happens to my ears and its difficult to hear myself talk especially during working. i think maybe you need to exercise the muscles with chewing and swallowing.. i hope this helps :)

Hi,

I can completely relate to what people are feeling. Since about the age of 7, my ears pop every time I swallow, move my jaw, yawn, eat and drink etc. Airplanes were a complete nightmare, as well as driving to higher elevations (absolutely monstrous popping and sometimes it felt like my ear drums were tearing/exploding, coupled with pain). I had been to several ENT's who prescribed the usual nasal sprays, decongestants etc with no effect. A CT scan did not reveal anything.

I decided to put in eustachian tubes (ear tubes, grommets) and even though it hasnt fixed the problem completely, it is much better. Airplanes are a lot better- my ears can still feel slightly uncomfortable, but nothing like the pain and continuous popping like before. I still have popping associated with swallowing and yawning and sometimes if i have a cold, the grommets wont work as well, but taking cold and flu tablets in conjunction with grommets have helped a lot.

However, putting in ear tubes means a few sacrifices- like having to wear ear plugs in water, showers etc. They may also need to be removed and re-inserted if they get clogged. The long term grommets usually last about 2 years.

I would recommend getting ear tubes for flying/driving purposes, but keep in mind, that symptoms like popping, ringing etc may still occur in day to day life. Hopefully, one day a cure can be found!!

Dr's can be jerks.  There are so many people with this popping crackling problems, you would think it would be a common ailment to an ENT specialist.  I've had the problem for 25 years, its almost like I can flex my ear muscles and I get the popping crackling,  I hold my nose and blow to feel like I'm clearing it, but it never lasts.  When I went to see a specialist years ago he rudely said, "well I can cut your eustachian tubes, but then you wouldn't be able to hear"  Of course he was being a sarcastic jerk.  Although he did tell me I had small eustachain tube, for whatever that is worth.  Someone later told be that having tubes put in my ears would help.  Never did it though, and have just learned to live with it.

I have found that using a single earplug seems to help  the problem.

Sounds like since you are extremely sensitive to sounds and have a great range of hearing that your brain has been 'trained' to access certain areas of the brain and now the brain and your hearing is like a finely tuned Ferarri.  I have worked with children with special needs in particular Autism and many children are what they called 'sensory defensive'.  This sounds like because of your music and singing background you have also highly 'trained' your brain to hear certain sounds which in your own case would be normal for you. For people who are affected due to developmental issues prior to birth such as children with Autism, certain areas of the brain are in essence 'superwired' for sound and thus are highly sensitive and can hear things that most people can't but unfortunately can get quite irritated as the sounds appear way over the top for them to tolerate.  I myself, even though I do not have Autism or any other developmental issues suffer from the same phenomena. You may want to try using small headphones/ear buds like the old 'walkmans' to listen to some nice soothing "Vivaldi' (classical and brain rhythmic) type music.  This might help you distract your brain or in reality what you are doing is 'flooding' the brain with lots of regulating stimuli sound.  I am a mental health practitioner (PHD) and not an MD but sounds like the other, pressure, clicking, etc, may also be jaw/TMJ/ in addition to auditory issues that revolve around barametric issues with your environment?  Just a guess. Does it do this when you are in the desert/dry air v. moist/humid/rainy/cloudy days?  I really feel for you.  I would check out, dental/TMJ stuff/ barametric pressure issues/chiropractic/bone disruption issues/pressure on the mastoid area near your ear/.  Have you also tried diving into a swimming pool head first and see what happens?  Don't laugh, I had pressure and clicking issues as well many years ago and I was in Hawaii and a captain of the boat that we were on taking us out snorkeling, suggested this to me and suer enough it worked!  I dove off the end of the boat head first into the water about 6 to 8 feet below the surface of the water, came up to the surface of the water and no more clicking!  It was amazing, but just another idea.  Good luck to you!

I have had most of these same symptoms. The popping in the ear is the worst along with the pressure. Mine is in my left ear and at times I couldn't even have the window down while driving because the wind would hurt so bad I thought my ear drum was going to burst. I talked to many dr.'s and an ear specialist as well and no help. Finally I was having back pains and a friend of mine is a chiropractor and told me to come in for a free look over. As we were going through my symptoms I mentioned my ear problem as well and, this could have been the dr./business man talking, but he said with certainty that it is due to spinal problems pulling on my muscles all the way up in my ear and causing everything to tighten up. He said with my case it was treatable, but would likely require continuous treatment. Well being the skeptic I am I wasn't so sure, but was willing to try anything. After only three treatments I could tell the difference, and after about three months felt so much better. Unfortunately my insurance changed and I just couldn't afford to keep it up, but thought 'hey it's much better and i can live with this', but it's back and getting worse so I am looking for a more permanent solution myself. I noticed for me it's worse when I'm tense, stressed, having back pains or muscle tightness in my back. So I believe the my dr. friend was right and I think going to see a chiropractor would  definitely make a great difference, as it did with me, and if I could have kept up the treatment I would have as it was definitely making a difference.

Hey, I had this same problem on and off for a few years. This year it lasted until around July. Really drove me crazy. THEN I brought home a new dog who sleeps next to my bed. His nose and throat were so congested at night that he could not breathe properly. I had a light bulb moment. That night I collected all the dried flowers (Australian Natives mostly, such as Banksias - beautiful flowers by the way) and tossed them. I had them all over the house, including in my bedroom. Believe it or not, next day my ears stopped popping and have never popped since. My dog also does not have the same congestion symptoms. Who would have thought! The pollen from dried flowers in my house was causing me to have this reaction. I was at my wits end prior to this and did not know how I could go through life like this. Problem solved thank goodness.
