Hi,
While I'm not sure about the alternate treatments, I have gotten the cortisone shot in a treatment attempt. I can say, that while it wasn't harmful to me (other than a very unpleasant injection) it didn't help me in any way. After the numbing medication for the shot wore off, I was right back where I started. My experience with cortisone is it was completely ineffective.
It could have a different effect for you! But that's my view on it.

Hi,

I actually had to have my outer sesamoid bone removed due to the break in it. Upon opening my foot up, it shattered into pieces, and apparently had to be shaved off. I went through rehab, and followed everything i was told to do.

Years later, I am still having consistent pain / irriation in my foot. Whether its walking a lot, or exercising, it can get pretty bad. It is a very nagging pain that stays around for quite some time as well. Because i have already had it removed, i am unsure as to what my options could be for some relief. I have tried orthotics, and even expensive fitted running shoes.

Hey there, sorry to hear you are suffering!
Yes I had immense pain when stretching my toe, no pain now but does feel a little stiff when I do my stretches. The pads I used were ones from amazon called metatarsal gel pads, they are a beige colour- sorry it won't let me post a link on this forum! The only heat I applied was in the bath or the occasional hot water bottle when really sore. No ice therapy as I found this made my foot loads worse. The slippers just bought are almost like wedges so good support with loads of cushioning, they were only cheap supermarket ones from Tesco. I tried using special insoles too but they really aggravated my sesamoiditus! Good luck x

I'm a 15 year old ballet dancer who dances about 20 hours a week. For about 3 years I've had pain in the ball of my foot (big toe and the tendons just below). I've been to 3 orthos and had 3 X-Rays and one MRI. They found nothing but a bipartite sesamoid. My foot will ache after about and hour of dancing on relevé or en pointe. It's not a sharp pain (but it has been), mostly just the kind of ache that makes you grit your teeth mixed with a slight burning sensation. I ice everyday and massage my arches but to no avail. I don't know what to do anymore, no doctor seems to help. Also since I'm a dancer when they test for motion I'm considered normal although for me it feels tight. I've tried orthotics and one podiatrist even gave me a walking boot for when it "flared up". After dance the area right below my foot is kind of soft and fluidy. I just don't know what it is and why it's not healing, any suggestions? Also I can't really afford to take a ton of time off and I have tried Theraband excercises and KT taping. Thanks!

Hi! I was wondering if your sesamoiditis has healed with TECAR therapy. I had my first session last week and the wear and tear pain when stretching the toe + the dull pain under pressure have consistently decreased-although they are still there every now and then. But I wonder if this is only a short time effect. How often have you been going for TECAR? What did the MRI show? Thanks so much!

Thank you for your reply! Very useful, and I'm glad your condition healed. Heat therapy does work, indeed. I am doing TECAR theray sessions at the moment and they do relieve the pain -radiowaves producing heat that helps the healing. Hope this is helpful infos for some of you! Take care :)

Hi! I was wondering if the TECAR has worked in the long term? Can you do load bearing activities at the moment? Cheers

Hi--I know you posted this a while back, but I was wondering how you were doing. My daughter, who is 10, was diagnosed with sesamoiditis about 2 months ago. Nothing is really helping...rest, ice, boot, physical therapy. Are you still doing better after the FDM treatment or therapy? What exactly is that? I'm willing to try anything for my daughter. Thanks so much!

Hi there-- I'm sorry to hear that your daughter has been diagnosed with sesamoisditis. The fascial distortion modeling (FDM) helped me quite a bit. In the beginning the pain was so unbearable I was willing to do anything, so I completely understand the willingness to try everything under the sun to get ride of it. its been a year and I still have lingering pain, but I function okay. I had a total of 6-8 FDM treatments which were helpful in "pushing" the inflammation out. I couldn't justify paying for the treatments if I wasn't getting any better, so I started doing it myself and invested in therapy balls, a heat boot (inferno) and a cold therapy boot (cryo) and started my own therapy. Almost a year has passed and I honestly thought I'd be over all of this by now, and it frustrates me that I'm still not 100% healed. I will say, as some of the other folks have mentioned in this forum, that staying off off of the affected foot as much as possible, using a metatarsal toe sling, dr scholl's ball of foot pads, combo of heat/cold therapy helped me tremendously. I now am able to walk without a limp and as long as I wear the ball of foot pad, I can get around pretty good. it's still here, but I hold out hope that I'll be able to run again. Sending positive thoughts to your daughter and all of us for speedy recoveries and the ability to walk without feeling pain. Take care--dg

Thank you! That is so nice of you. I appreciate all of the advice. I'm so sorry you're going through this and have been for so long. Hoping you and my little girl find some relief somehow. I can't imagine her not being able to play her sports, but then I worry about long-term walking and exercising ability too. What a nightmare. We've been to orthopedic surgeons and just had our second appointment with a chiropractor that is going to try some different things. First he just did some deep tissue massaging and put some anti-inflammatory cream and tape on her foot. That was early this morning. No relief yet. We'll do that all week, and if by Friday things haven't calmed down, he mentioned orthotics and laser therapy. I've read so many comments about orthotics not working, but we'll see. Good luck to you!!

I am sorry to hear about your daughter... I am a 32 year old dancer and because of the same reasons of all people wrting here, i have had to stop high-impact activities and sometimes walking long-distances is also compromised. Apart from the frustration given by having the injury, not being able to do what you love is also not helping... Being 32, I am scared of long term implications of this injury, and at the same time I am scared of returning to any dancing in the future having always to think that I need to be careful. It is not easy and can lead to compensation which can damage other parts of the body. I read you will be trying laser, have you thought about Indiba (previously called Tecar) therapy? It is working great with me and relieves a lot of the pain. However, at the same time xrays (taken only 5 months after the symptoms appeared, thanks to the health service here....) have shown a fracture in my fibular sesamoid, which was probably been the cause of the pain since the very start. I am considering immobilising the foot now but continuing with the therapy that stimulates blood vessels so to promote healing. All in all, sesamoiditis and sesamoid fractures have very similar symptoms so make sure you get a precise diagnose since early on -xrays + MRi can give a good picture of it. Hope your little daughter finds relief soon!

You are so sweet :) Thank you for the great advice! I will look into Indiba. I have definitely seen some information about TECAR helping people. I didn't realize there was a new name for it. I'm so sorry that you aren't able to dance :( I'm sure it is so upsetting and frustrating. It sounds like you're doing better though with Indiba? Are you feeling good, just worried about going back to dancing and re-injuring yourself? I hope you are good and that maybe you can slowly return to doing what you love. Good luck, and thanks again for the Indiba recommendation...

Hey everyone,
Early last year (2016) my tight foot started to get a dull ache after a hard day's work (everyday 6 days a week o hard tiled floors walking & talking in an extremely busy showroom - way busier than what most people would class as busy) and I'd go to bed , slowly yet surely my foot would start to ache or throb slightly.
As a few months past the same feeling would come-on however it was getting slightly worse- I just thought my bunion was getting sore from being rushed day in day out. However, the lead up to the "big bang" was a sure sign something big was coming , I could feel on & off throbbing, could not even have a light cotton bed sheet over my foot (especially on the bunion area) then I relised at work for a few days my foot was now a bit sore whilst working & I started to bump into or become clumsy like whilst walking around. Next few days past, nights were bad but I persisted - then one morning I was at work & my foot literally exploded "The Big Bang" within a few hours my was swallon then it just exploded to a "Club foot" could not walk, could not stand, could not drive - the sensation was like someone had a Saw & was cutting my foot up left to right from the bunion across diagonally.
NEVER EVER AGAIN , I DO NOT WISH THIS PAIN ON ANYONE!!!!
2 weeks at home strict bed rest, ice, ice, ice, swelling, toxins had to subside on it on, serious painkillers from the doctor, Then 3wk back at work, Moonboot for 7weeks plus additional "high grade cortisone" injection just to make sure "just like when a Vampire dies, you take a wooden stake & pierce it through their heart - just to finish them off"
After the cortisone, it took 2weeks to really work in - and I got 9 nearly 10months peace - until 3 days ago... JGJG

JGJG continued;
So just to clarify about 5 weeks ago (middle April 2017) my foot started twitching, I thought my 1st cortisone was starting to wear-off so I had guided one but, 5wks later this slowly has worn off as this particular doctor had only given me a low-grade cortisone.
Cut a "long" story short this past Saturday night I tore-up the dance floor for 1hr (which I most enjoyed) and come this Tuesday 15th May, my sesamoiditis, has fleared up, swollen around the inner of my foot, knuckle and Big toe region cannot walk properly. I have been straight to my podiatrist (cast mouldings done, for insoles) flat -out with the icing & back to the Moon boot for at least 2-3 weeks to relieve pressure) and later possibly back to my original Doctor for that High grade Cortisone injection - fingers crossed it works xx
So does it go away for good, I think not!!!
So don't kid-yourself... :-(
It's just on-going maintenance.
It is depressing though, no long walks, no tearing-up the dance floor (75/88years old fair enough but, at 34 & single it's frickin sad) and stressing over work, keeping your job and paying your mortage...
Seriously thinking about the surgery, as I have 2 of these "little sausages" and only 1 is giving me the sh**s (so to speak), so maybe I should just get it over with...
You tell me Doctor???
Maybe it's time to get back into swimming laps, tumble-turns, laps + goggles...
I'll report back in one month, for you & the whole world.
Smile and the World smiles with you
