How is your daughter doing? My little girl (11years old) was diagnosed with sesamoiditis (bipartite sesamoids) 7 months ago. nothing has really worked. The walking boot still
irritates it. shecead in a cast for 3 weeks over the summer and was actually able to slowly return to soccer. She practiced about 6 times but then in her first game playing (very minimal playing), it became irritated again. That was in August. Now in November, after not being to get over the hump again, she is back in a cast. It’s been the worst experience, and we don’t see an end. We are on our second pair of orthotics, and they don’t help. They don’t seem to “float” the sesamoid enough. We’ve been to about 5 doctors, and each one has a different opinion. You can tell they don’t often treat this injury so don’t know exactly what to do. Anyway, I’d love to hear how your daughter is doing, if she is doing okay and able to play soccer. What helps her the most? Also, which soccer shoes did you end up getting her? Thanks so much!!

JGJG, hi...did you end up having the surgery?? Just curious how you’re doing. My daughter is scheduled to have surgery next week to remove the medial sesamoid in her right foot. We’ve been to so many doctors, and the last 2 have suggested surgery because theybsays we have exhausted all conservative measures. Both feel confident and say they have success with helping people by removing their sesamoid (just one sesamoid, not both). Anyway, hope you are doing well!

JGJG here, in response to your query,
Just do the surgery get it over and done with.
I should have done this like a whole year ago.
It's been exactly one week today, and to be honest I'm feeling much better.
I think the third day after the surgery was the worst pain wise, as you can feel the blood run through the wound area from elevated position to hanging when your on the crutches but Oxynorm works a treat. Honestly the pain after is basically a dull ache and just that one day on the third day that was really sore, Everyday gets way better.
My boot is giving me the sh**s though I just want to rip it off but I can't,
plus it's hot Down under
My surgery was successful according to my doctor, no big toe flapping over the other toes etc, I think it helps that you have a doctor that is well experienced with this particular surgery - but in saying this they don't know how bad it is until they get in there.
Hence, one of my tendons had to be cut out as aprantley the busted bone had tore it up,
See what happens (no good, cortisone only covers up but you do further damage)
I had only the one sesamoid removed,
So my foot in general should be okay, I'd say it will take a good 3months for the overall swelling to go down so sneakers it is.
It will be interesting to see how I will be walking after the boot, pain, nerve damage, I might regret having the surgery, who knows???
But it's better than dead bones and the spread of arthritis.
All the best for your daughter this week, I'm sure she will be okay especially if she's young, things work out better when your younger, I'm now middle aged now as my mother likes to remind me & your not 20 or 25anymore... :-( :-( :-(
Keep me posted, and I'll be in touch within a few weeks for the update.
All the very best and Merry Christmas

Jgjg— i am interested to know how you are doing as well, post surgery.
Going on two years with my right foot sesamoitis and while it has healed 95% it’s not gone away completely and i am quickly reminded of that when I’m on my feet too long. Although I am very grateful to have relief and am able to wear regular shoes again, I’ll never forget the hardship that a foot injury brings. Almost no one understands the pain we endure every waking moment and it is so frustrating to be limited in activity. I hope that everyone here experiences a positive outcome at some point and sooner than later. Thank you JGJG and everyone else for sharing your journey. This forum has helped me greatly. Take good care!

JGJG - wondering how you’re doing too. I’m the mom with the daughter who is was dealing with sesamoiditis too. She ended up having surgery at the end of December and is now 5 weeks post surgery. She seems to be doing pretty well. She’s going to physical therapy twice/week to work on range of motion, strengthening, stretching.. She is weaning out of her boot and attempting to walk in shoes more. She is able to walk for about 6 minutes on a treadmill at this point. It definitely gets sore and still is swollen but her running shoes fit. How are you doing? I know your surgery was a little bit before my daughter’s. Hope you are doing well! And everyone else too :)

Hey, everyone! PainfulPodsPape here! I'm so glad to see that this thread continues, and so many sufferers give updates. I am relatively normal and can run if I want to. I cannot run the way that I used to, though, because I believe that a contributing factor to the development of sesamoiditis was the stopping/starting so quickly in high intensity interval training. If I run frequently, I have to be vigilant and offload my sesamoids areas with metatarsal pads. Proper footwear is occasionally an issue to navigate. There's only a few types of shoes that are appropriate and I'm sometimes using trial and error with different combos of inserts and shoes. But I can go without doing any of it, too. I think the #1 help for me is the acupuncture motor nerve stim. It is brilliant for obliterating pain and resetting the relationship between the brain and a painful/injured area. As a health care practitioner, I want to caution you in the use of ibuprofen daily. It is not benign. It causes damage to your stomach, kidneys, and liver. There are other options for reducing inflammation. Drugs in general, by their nature, cause other problems for your body. Very few actually fix a problem, rather they obscure the symptoms and cause others. I don't believe that sesamoiditis is hopeless, it is a matter of finding the right treatment and accepting changes (maybe temporary, maybe longer, maybe big, maybe small) to your lifestyle.

Heard the expression "Not happy Jan!"
Well as of today, and the past few days I'm not too happy.
Unfortunately I've come up to what is nearly the 8wk mark and things have taken a turn considerably - and. Not for the good.
The past either 3-4weeks I have come down with a Staph infection, though Im pretty certain it has been stewing for longer than this but nobody has been listening...
I have been into Private Emergency 3x, to my local GP at least 7x (I've lost count) had the nurse for new dressings etc and been back to my Specialist a few times to no real avail except have some antibiotic tablets & being told your being alittle hectic with the worrying.
Well can I say,
It's starting to wear me down to be honest.
Only because I sent a great email to my Specialist today I got a better response than my last few visits in person (must be because I put c**p in writing he's got to deal with it - and this is what I get for paying private health???
I would have been better going into a top notch public hospital over here 4weeks ago and I would have bypassed all the drama and I bet my issue would be resolved and I'd be back at work.
So long story short, only because of my email with images attached (not my hectic worrying etc) has my specialist completed a referral for a bone scan. So I would now assume that he believes I could now have a bone infection possibly or if not just checking to rule out.
Well at neatly the 8week mark I'm a tad pissed-off. Just read up on bone infection, not fun hey.
Good news is that I'm into very big Sneakers and slowly walking though with pain on and off - however I do Not feel like I'm improving a whole lot better. So let's hope the infection I have is only soft tissue.
Bone scan early this week and I will not know results until next week sometime - unless I chuck an absolute performance with tears and all and go into our public hospital where things will be dealt with properly.

Try Turmeric supplements. I actually purchase organic turmeric and made my own vitamins with coconut oil and honey- Add the pepper as well, it acts as a catalyst and makes the anti inflammatory properties 200% more potent. After 2 months of taking it 3 times a day- less pain noticeable improvements. In conjunction with Epson salt soaks and good shoes- amazing .

Hi, has your daughter been able to return to gymnastics? My 15 year old was supposed to be training level 9 and has been battling a bad case of seismoiditis. She hyperextended the area on the springboard . Mri and X-rays show no break.. just a lot of inflammation even after 9 weeks in a ortho shoe. Now her dr has her casted for 2 weeks to see if that helps and she says she is pain free in the cast but she has camps coming up .. so frustrating . She broke her ankle when training 8.. came back and had a very good 8 season and now got this injury. Praying she can get back to it

I have to admit I had a small problem in the first week with the shoe rubbing against the tendon in the back of my leg. I developed quite the blister :( After the shoe stretched a bit,all was good. The is so comfortable to wear and that's a good thing because I work on a cement floors and do a lot of standing and walking. orthofeet shoes are a godsend in my opinion.

Hi, I'm curious how your gymnast daughter has been over the last several months with her sesamoiditis? My 15 year old soccer player has dealt with it in the past and has periodic flare ups that we deal with.
