GMOs have become controversial in the last years, specially in Europe, due to their economical impact and the risks they could have in human health and in the environment. But, as they as bad as they are portrayed?

What are GMOs?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), a genetically modified organism (GMOs) is the one that has been modified by scientists, at the level of gene expression. In other words, scientists introduce genes in to the DNA of these organisms in order to modify a specific feature, such as size, plague and herbicide resistance, nutritional content and allergenic potential. The genes that are inserted come from microorganisms and nowadays, most of GMOs have been altered to increase their production yield by making them more resistant to chemicals and plant diseases.

Currently, several GMOs are marketed in both developed and developing countries, including the US, Canada, China, Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Australia, India, South Africa, Mexico, Romania, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Colombia, the Philippines and Honduras.

Some of these GMO products include soybean, corn, canola and plum.

Other products are still in the stage of being developed, such as tobacco, rice, maize and salmon, and still have to be assessed so they can be introduced in the market.

GMOs risk assessment

Because GMOs have modifications that do not occur naturally, governments believe it is important to assess their potential effects on human health and on the environment. 

For this, regulations have been established in order to keep under control the production, assessment and commercialization of GMOs; and the WHO together with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), have developed documents regarding GMOs risk assessment.

According to this and to other regulations, GMOs are evaluated to determine their potential toxicity towards the human being and the environment, their potential to cause allergies, their components and their nutritional and toxic characteristics, how stable the gene that was introduced is and any side effects that the introduction of this gene might have.

GMOs that are currently available in the market went through all the required assessments in order for them to be suitable for human consumption.

 So, yes, they are safe, and they continue under evaluation, now that they are consumed, in order to ensure that they are safe on a long-term basis.

Concerns about GMOs

Despite of the regulations that exist to ensure the safety of GMOs, a large number of individuals and non-governmental organizations have raised concerns regarding the safety of these products towards human health and the environment.

Why? Because the genetic modification of a plant or any other organism may result in the alteration of the genetics of the consumer and of similar organismal species, causing disruption in the environment and the promotion of certain diseases related to genetic alteration, not only in humans but also in other beings, such as wild plants, insects and other animals.

Concerns also relate to the fact that companies will claim ownership on the GMOs that they develop, monopolizing the production of these products and introducing monocultures, which would threaten to reduce the variety of products that can be grown in a certain region. These could potentially harm local agricultural practices and increase the price of GMO products that would be offered to the general public.

 

A Specific Case: Genetically Modified Corn

One of the most sounded cases of GMOs is the one of corn. An American biotechnology company that produces and commercializes genetically modified GMOs has been producing GM corn for years now, and according to studies conducted by them, this product complies with the appropriate health and environmental safety regulations for it to be consumed by humans without any toxicity risk.

Concerns about GM corn toxicity

In 2007, a French research group reported the results of experiments that they performed to evaluate the toxicity of GM corn in the health of male and female rats. They found that the consumption of GM corn caused slight effects on the growth of these animals, as well as signs of toxicity in the liver and the kidneys

They concluded then that further long-term consumption of GM corn experiments needed to be performed in order to determine the toxic nature of the product.

Of course, these results raised a great concern regarding GMOs, because they suggested that biotechnological companies, as well as governments, could be hiding data showing a certain risk in the consumption of GMOs, so that they could be commercialized despite this information.

To settle the matter, independent research groups ran the same experiments to evaluate the risks of GM corn consumption. 

They could not find any toxicity related to the genetic modifications performed to corn, but mainly related the liver and kidney toxicity findings to the herbicides that are used in the production of the plant.

Nobody has been able to exclude possible toxic effects regarding the genetic manipulation though, since available results are not enough to draw a conclusion. More over, there are also research groups that claim that GM corn is as safe as non-GM corn, of course based on results from experiments that have been performed in animals fed with the GM product. 

Despite this, several research groups continue expressing their concerns regarding the experimental analysis that biotechnological companies use to establish if their products are dangerous to human health and to the environment. They argue that their experimental approach might not be the correct one to determine if their products are safe or not.

Other issues regarding GMOs

GMOs have several advantages

Taking into account that the world population continues to expand and so the food demand, the production of GMOs, including plants and animals, in a not so far future, could help in reducing the lack of food in certain regions of the world, by introducing not only disease but also drought-resistance crops, for example. 

In conclusion, both the advantages and disadvantages of the production and consumption of GM products still have to be carefully evaluated, case-by-case, since it is impossible to assess all the GMOs under the same terms. The risk assessment strategies should be revised to ensure that they efficiently evaluate toxicity effects in a short and long term consumption scheme.

The economical implications of GMOs production also require the same attention as the assessment of their safety. However, we don’t have to discard this technology, since it can bring several benefits to our current society.
