Hi, I'm looking for some guidance on what choices my boyfriend has for his hammertoe.hes had it since he was 3 and he is now 16 and his toe is completely crossed over the other. will surgery be needed for this severity? he has tried a splint type thing that separates his toes but he says it hurt and extremely uncomfortable. I'd like to better understand his options

Hi Kimby, with hammertoes the only real option to correct them is surgery depending on the severity. Otherwise people with hammertoes just sort of deal with it unless it gets worse. So long as he is able to walk fine then he should be okay, but I think that since his toes are crossed over then it would affect his walk too much to be a good idea. Does that help? I think it's great that you are looking out for him. Keep me posted on what happens okay?

My neice had hammer toes on both feet. Both of her baby toes were laid right over the other toe. Being a girl and either wearing sandals or running barefoot was a big deal for her and she was quite shy about showing her bare feet. At the age of 15, she had the surgery on an out patient basis. Now she is so happy that she can proudly display her twinkling tosies.

I didn't know it was an outpatient basis. I thought that the recovery time was usually about 1 month or so. Is that wrong? Can you let me know? I am not very familiar with it.

Oh yes, full recovery does take a while. The actual surgery is done as an outpatient. She arrived at the hospital at 8a.m. and was able to go home about supper time. She was uncomfortable for a few days, but it became easier as the days passed.

Well it seams that this is not so complicated at all. If you can go the same day after the surgery home, then maybe the best thing for your boyfriend would be this. As I see bbfeet said her niece had to lay down at home, but this is not a big deal concerning that he does not need to be in hospital.
Has your boyfriend considered this operation?

Well that makes a lot more sense to me now. I was pretty sure that it had a pretty long recovery time and I wasn't sure about it, so thanks for confirming that for me. I'm glad to hear that she's doing much better now. Did it take about a month or two?

She is now 18 and doesn't regret a single minute of the surgery. She has darling little toes and she is always wearing toes rings and getting french dip pedi's. It took about 2 months before she could wear a pair of sneakers comfortably.
She is so funny, she takes pictures of her feet all the time o.O and i suggested she go into feet modeling as she has the perfect feet/toes.

Have you ever visited? When I was there I saw these little advertisments on the subway that were actually pictures of people's feet so yeah, I bet you could do that! I had been under the impression that the recovery time was roughly 2 months so thanks for confirming that for me.
