The 125-pound male bear, perhaps 2 to 3 years old, wandered into the Presbyterian Medical Group gastroenterology laboratory around 7:15 a.m in Rio Rancho, north of Albuquerque.

It went in through an automatic door at the lab calmly and retreated into a side room and then further into a bathroom. He was probably hungry from a winter of hibernation. Soon after, an officer fired a tranquilizer dart and sedated the young visitor within a minute. After all, he didn’t have an appointment.

There weren’t many people in the laboratory when the bear walked in, a nurse, perhaps a receptionist and a patient and spouse. They were all very much surprised when they spotted the early visitor. They were safely evacuated.

After being sedated, the bear was released in the Manzano Mountains, about 20 miles to the southeast. Before letting him go, they tagged him on an ear, so they can recognize him if he shows up again.
Wandering bears doesn’t seem to be unusual in the area. They get displaced from their dens and come looking for food.
