Hi, I've been having the same problem for 5 years now (waking up every single night with a sharp pain in my abdomen, usually on the lower left side but not always the same spot). It goes away almost immediately after sitting up right or walking around. I'm 26 years old and in good shape, and otherwise very healthy. I've done a whole bunch of tests (colonoscopy, endoscopy, CT scan, MRI etc) and the best answer I got is that i have a slightly over-sized colon, but that didn't really explain why I'm experiencing the night pains. I was told to eat foods with a low fiber count, which seemed to help somewhat but never fully got rid of the problem. Also a low fiber diet isn't exactly a long term solution. Cutting out carbs also helped but again does not seem like a realistic solution. This is the first time I've heard of a UPJ obstruction, which is encouraging. Having read up about it online, I did not feel that the condition matched the symptoms explained here. I would be delighted to hear more about this and any useful info/links you may have on the subject? Thanks!

Hi I have been experiencing pain on my left side and sometimes radiate to my back, same part. I wake up like around 5 am sometimes every night for the past 5 weeks and have to sit up. I find that if I go to the bathroom for a number one or two the pain subsides, but today I went and the pain is still there. I had an endoscopy done because I was experiencing serious gas and acid reflux. I did an endoscopy and found that there was inflammation in my esophagus. My internist tested me for celiac and have pylori and it came up negative. The Gi and internist told me to use Miralax everyday because they see a lot of poop on an xray I did. I really don't understand what this problem is. Any suggestions would be helpful.

I have been experiencing the same thing on and off for the past 5 years, it just happens randomly, I have had it for the past 2 nights and currently have it as I write. I thought it was due to fatty foods and may be a gallbladder issue but now I think it is an allergy or intolerance to Onions and the Onion family, garlic, spring onions etc. Hope it helps.

ALERGY OR INTOLERENCE TO ONIONS
Many people have trouble digesting onions, especially when eaten raw. Some people belch, develop gastroesophageal reflux, have abdominal pain and bloating, constipation, diarrhea, or feel as if their meal is sitting in their stomach for longer than usual. If any of these symptoms occur after you eat onions, it is important to understand the reason why they may be causing these problems so you can find a way to better tolerate them.
Gas Production
Onions are a gas-producing vegetable, like broccoli, Brussels sprouts and artichoke. Eating onions causes the formation of gas in your digestive tract, which can make you belch, bloat, feel discomfort in your stomach, and have flatulence. You may take some over-the-counter digestive enzymes to help you better digest onions and prevent the formation of gas and other unpleasant symptoms.
Sphincter Pressure
A study done with people with gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, showed that onions can affect the pressure within your stomach, which forces the sphincter to open, allowing your last meal along with the acidity of your stomach to come back up and burn your sensitive esophagus at the same time. If this happens to you, try having smaller amounts of onions next time to see if you may get away with eating a bit less of this versatile vegetable that is used in almost all cuisines.

I suffer from the same exact pain. I was wonder if you suffer from anxiety? I was told that this is all anxiety related but its very hard to believe this as doctors put me on ppi's for years cause they don't know what it is.

Hi, I have had similar pain for past ten years, always was a side sleeper until I started getting pain in my left side, then started getting it on the right side as well, a crampy kind of pain that bothers me for the whole day if I do sleep on my side. I've been forced to sleep on my back as a result but never get a full restful sleep as it's not my natural sleeping position and I'm now a very light sleeper as a result, wake up very easily. I have been diagnosed with hiatus hernia and possible IBS, I have always been a light eater, also have GERD. Very frustrating, have had numerous tests but they have shown nothing out of the ordinary, would be nice to find an answer

I suffered from the same kind of abdominal/side discomfort for 3 years and my only relief was to sleep in a recliner so I can be slightly elevated. I got tired of sleeping in a recliner to I went out and bought a sleep number bed. The iLE Limited Edition one about a year ago. I lower my sleep number to 25-30 and put it at a slight incline. I can sleep on my side (curled up) or on my back. I now sleep through the night (minus the occasion bathroom break). I'm not hear to promote the Sleep Number Bed. I'm just saying, it has worked wonders for me! I think any bed that inclines will do. Hope this helps anyone out there with this problem. For me…it got depressing not being able to figure out what was causing the problem/discomfort. I still don't know what's causing it but I've been able to find a solution to at least help me sleep.
