Dear Nicola

Sperm can live in a woman's body for about 5 days. Fertilisation occurs after ovulation (if not, period comes 13 days later). Implantation (and thus pregnancy) occurs 9 days (+/-3) after ovulation/fertilisation.

Some people sense they are pregnant early on (but not usually until after implantation); some do not until much later. Some have been known to give birth without previously knowing they were pregnant!

A pregnancy test after your next period is due is a good indication. A full blood test and exam by your doctor is the best way ... but not until after your next period has certainly not arrived.

Hope that helps

Dear Nicola

I'll try and explain simply, sentence by sentence.

"Sperm can live in a woman's body for about 5 days" After ejaculation, the sperm (in the semen ejaculated) will live in your body for 5 days, so it has (they have) 5 days to fertilise an egg as it is released from your ovary. If an egg is released on any of those 5 days, one of the sperm could fertilise that egg.

"Fertilisation occurs after ovulation (if not, period comes 13 days later)." Ovulation is when an egg is released from your ovary into your fallopian tubes. If it meets a sperm, it could get fertilised. If not, or if implantation of a fertilised egg does not take place, your body's preparation for pregnancy is no longer required, so your period arrives.

"Implantation (and thus pregnancy) occurs 9 days (+/-3) after ovulation/fertilisation." Implantation is when a fertilised egg embeds itself into the lining of your womb. That is when you become pregnant.

I hope this helps. If you want to know more about your body, please ask (privately if you prefer).
