Hello, everyone.
I'm a 22 yr old male college student. I got my tonsils out on 10-20-09. Its now the 26th. This is my first surgery, next to my adnoids which I was too young to remember.
I woke up at 5am this morning in excruciating pain. It still hurt real bad. I have been prescribed Demerol as my pain medicine, I take 2 to 2.5 tspn every 2-3 hours, as prescribed by my ENT doc. Its numbs the pain for a while, but even when it is numbed it hurts so horribly. I seriously almost cried, and I'm a pretty tough guy when it comes to pain. :$ I also feel like my uvula is swollen or irritated, possibly due to the surgery.
So far I am on a liquid sustenance diet, soups, broths, ice cream/sherbert, popsicles, yogurt, pudding, water, gatorade you name it. It hurts to even swallow water, it makes me think twice about grabbing my bottle to stay hydrated. I usually have to force myself to drink it.
Will this pain ever end? I'm so miserable. :-( I guess I could use some suggestions or maybe words of encouragement.

Obviously I can't tell you you have nothing wrong but I think people react quite differently to surgery. Some heal quickly with almost no ill effects while healing. Others take longer and have a difficult time.
I had my adeniods and tonsils out when I was 10. I'm 69 now so the memories of it are not too fresh. I do remember it was quite painful for much longer than I wanted and I felt they lied to me about it. I don't think they gave me anything for pain except ice cream. Cold, to numb the pain! I tried to learn to swallow liquid without swallowing, but it didn't work.
I can tell you that I certainly reacted differently to the surgery when I had a vasectomy, than everyone else I knew who did it before me. One of my friends actually came to work in the afternoon after having it done in the morning. Me? I was bed with a scrotum the size of a softball for nearly a week. Completely black and blue and very painful, using ice packs constantly.
Twenty years later when I had heart surgery, I expected to have a terrible time healing. I healed very quickly with little pain, and was back to work in less than a month.

I'm the topic creator, decided to make a name for myself.
Yeah, this has not been fun. I have been on Demerol, Lortab, and Dilaudid. I am currently back on the demerol because it works best. The Dilaudid had a panic attack side effect on me. Im probably looking at another full week before I can return to school. I had no idea recovery would be like this. My ENT told me my tonsils had bonded to muscle tissue near my ear, and its causing a pressure sort of pain. feels like my right ear wants to burst open every time I swallow.
In regard to the vasectomy, my father had that done, and then he got a reverse vasectomy. what torture!
