I'm a 29 yr old female who just had a tonsilectomy about 24 hours ago. Yesterday I was actually able to eat, talk and drink without too much trouble. However, since about 10pm last night, I can barely do any of it. It hurts so much to swallow. They have me on 25ml of tylenol/codeine every 4 hours, but it doesn't seem to help the pain at all. It has given me a migraine-like headache. I only was able to sleep about 1-2 hours last night.
Also, I just got over pneumonia a couple weeks ago. It seems as if something was triggered by the surgery. Whenever I lay down, I have to cough up phelgm, but due to my throat it won't come out. I am also wheezing. They also gave me liquid Zithromax (5 day supply).
Good thing is no bleeding or dehydration yet.
Here's my questions:
1. Pain is at about 9.5. Should I ask for something other than codeine, or do you think there's something abnormally wrong?
2. To help with the phelgm, can I take any type of decongestant, inhaler or nasal spray? Or will that affect my throat?
3. Can I take any type of sleep aid? I've only had about 4-6 hours of sleep in the last 48 hours.
Thank you.

CALL YOUR DOCTOR!
I am 31 yrs old and had my tonsills out one week ago today. You should be able to obtain way better pain control than a 9.5.
I am still at a 7 and seriously considering going to the ER. I saw my ENT yesterday and he gave me a shot of Celestole to boost the steroids I am already on. I am on my third RX for pain meds and am still not doing well.
I really think if you can't get your pain under better control and/or sleep that you should either call your surgeon or go to the ER.
Best of luck!

Got switched to Lortab -- so far much better. I was able to drink, eat and get a nap in. We'll see how the night and morning are.

1. YES- ask for different pain meds. Don't feel bad for not wanting to be in pain!!!
2. Stay away from milk/dairy. Drink LOTS of fluids , even if it hurts . It helps with the phlegm AND the pain!!!
3. Sleep aid?? Hmm I would ask your Dr.
I took one, But I had someone with me to make sure I didn't stop breathing or anything. Taking a sleep aid, with the pain meds increase the risk for respiratory depression. So I would try starting out with a change in pain meds first... Ask for liquid Vicodin or Liquid Percocet. Also ask for lidocaine to help numb your throat :-) Once you are on a pain med take it every 4 hours NO MATTER WHAT. Set your alarm!!! And DRINK TONS OF FLUIDS. The more you drink the less pain you have.
Hang in there!!!
