I was told by my surgeon that it would take two weeks to recover, five weeks later i attended his rooms and was told it could take 3 months.
To cut to the chase, it is now 5 months later, the pain has diminished considerably but i am still experiencing bleeding in my BM.
If I could do it all over again, I would put up with my piles. DO NOT UNDERGO THIS BARBARIC surgery

I witnessed my wife give birth to our two children, I had a vasectomy after the birth of our second child. But I did undergo hemorrhoid removal ( external and internal) and wish that some one would invent a time machine so I could avoid this stupid action of mine.

I browsed this thread over a year ago, when I was debating whether to have rubber band ligation (RBL) for my hemorrhoids. I'm grateful to all those who shared their stories. Having how had RBL done, I'm coming back to share my experience.
I have suffered hemorrhoids for about 15 years. I tried to manage them on my own for so long because I was too scared of surgery. I tried all the natural treatments. Anal ice packs helped with the swelling but didn't cure me. Last year they had gotten too bad and I decided I needed to see a doctor.
After reading many forum threads and articles in medical publications I decided that RBL was the safest option, with no risk of incontinence or other side effects. I was however worried about the pain.
After doing my research found myself a doctor who runs a private hemorrhoid clinic once a week, specialising in RBL. The doctor said he had performed over a thousand RBL treatments. I knew from my research that the doctor's experience is very important. The excruciating pain that some people experience is due to an inexperienced practitioner placing the bands too low on the hemorrhoid where the nerve endings are.
Another factor that swayed me is that the clinic's website linked to an independent review site where many of the doctor's past patients gave him excellent feedback for fixing their hemorrhoids using RBL.
When I saw the doctor he said I had 3 hemorrhoids ranging from grade 2-4. By this time the largest one was protruding about 1/2 from my anus. It was often painful and leaking pus.
Because my hemorrhoids were quite bad, it took three treatments, each one 3 months apart before my condition was resolved.
The RBL operation takes only a few minutes. I admit I initially experienced some discomfort having the apparatus inserted into my anus as I have never had anything shoved up there before (other than the anal ice pack, which was very small). But I got used to it after the first time.
The post-operative pain was bearable. After the first treatment I had to stay in bed for a couple of days because of the pain. I found that over the counter painkillers were enough to manage the pain. I would say the pain level was similar to having a bad toothache.
After the second and third treatments, I felt only minor discomfort for the rest of the day and didn't have to take painkillers. I was able to see friends and take a walk in the park with no issues.
Today, after three treatments I still have one hemorrhoid that hasn't completely gone, but it's much smaller now, and I barely notice it. Maybe I'll go back and have a fourth treatment if it persists.
So if you're thinking of having RBL done, find a doctor who's done it hundreds of times and can provide evidence of satisfied patients.
And to avoid any future recurrence of hemorrhoids, consider following a healthy diet. Today I eat a low carb, paleo style (grain and sugar free) diet high in vegetables, about 3 cups of vegetables with every meal. Just as importantly, I drink lots of water. I find it really helps to keep my bowel movements soft and smooth.
