Air hunger is a sensation of the urge to breathe and it can be caused by various things but usually caused by the detection of high levels of carbon dioxide in the blood. There are sensors in the carotid sinus and is one of the body's homeostatic mechanisms to ensure proper oxygenation. Air hunger can be very distressing and it triggers strong reactions to restore breathing. That is all I know about this sensation. I can’t tell you much about differences with asthma.
