I have degenerative disk disease, functional heart murmur, mild asthma, allergies, migraines, and restless legs... I am in the military (3 Iraq deployments) and get annual physicals and still run.  I also had a form of anemia when I was 3yrs old where my white blood cells were attacking my red blood cells and I was urinating blood (had a transfusion, no issues sense).  So anyways that is my history and here are my questions.  Sometimes when I eat late or not enough it feels like I am "bonking" or extremely weak, a few years ago after a blood test I was told I have a very high count of triglycerides, also sometimes when I stand I get darkening vision like its closing from the outside and sounds get muffled, this happens with extreme pain also.  Also sometimes my mind feels "foggy" and it is "sometimes" hard to remember things.  I am scheduled to see a doctor for my annual physical.  Any ideas or suggestions?!

Hi Bob,

The eat late or not enough "bonking" could be the result of low blood sugar.  Have you ever had it tested when you feel this way?  A fasting blood sugar test can help understand what is happening.

Darkening vision when standing could be a result of low blood pressure, or even as a result of your heart murmur.  How is your blood pressure?  It is normal for you to feel a bit "faint" if you stand up too fast.

Best to discuss these with your doctor.

Good luck and thank you for your service!

I had a fasting blood test done a couple yrs ago (still had symtoms then) they said I had high triacylglycerides but nothing to be worried about.  I have had the heart murmur for life and until the last couple yrs (when I developed asthma), was able to maintain a 6:03 run pace for as far as I wanted which leads me to believe its not my heart.  My blood pressure is routinely 130-110/80-60.  Thank you for your response.

When we stand up our blood vessels compensate to maintain blood pressure, they vasoconstrict.  If they don't compensate fast enough, we can get light headed or dizzy.

It's called orthostatic hypotension or positional hypotension.  As we get older it becomes more pronounced.

It could be a result of arteriosclerosis, although your BP is fine, possibly from the high triglycerides.

Yeah after researching my symptoms I was def going to get another fasting blood test and does seem like orthostatic hypotension.  Obviously I am not a doctor but I know my body pretty well and it falls in line.  I just never knew before that it could affect the brain so much, but reading about it that makes sense.  Lack of oxygen and blood in the brain could have multiple effects.  Thanks for the response!!
