The NIH has instructions for post-op situations. All forms of bowel surgery are included. See this link: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/patientinstructions/000068.htm
My doctor said that it's most important not to swallow any chunks of food, to chew everything thoroughly, and take colace (stool softener) three times a day.

My daughter just had her colon removed and she is 11 day out of surgery. I just wanted to thank you for sharing your personal experiences. As a mom, I wish I could take her pain away and put myself on that operating table instead of her. Now I feel I have a chance to help her learn to eat successfully so she can enjoy the rest of her childhood, unhindered and happy. I feel empowered and hopeful.

It has been ten months and my diet hasn't changed much since the surgery. I have to avoid high fiber and eat very little fresh fruits stay away from the good healthy foods if you don't you will have a lot of loose stools.I need to eat foods that are harder to digest meat eggs, noodles, rice.no kind of sausage. stay away from anything spicie or fried foods. Learn to eat it baked.I'm still trial and error.

My husband had a laproscopid sigmoid resection on April 14, 2015. Diverticular disease was quite widespread and most of his sigmoid was removed. If you can find a surgeon skilled in laproscopic surgery and can have the surgery done electively, that is definately the way to proceed. Hospital stay was about 3 nights. He is doing well and eating small portions of foods about 6 times per day. I found a link of acceptable and unacceptable foods.
His surgeon said that he could resume his normal diet, but it is probably best to ease into resumption of a "normal diet". His "normal" diet did include large amounts of fiber geared toward control of his diverticulosis. The diverticulosis diet was probably not what the average person eats as far as fiber intake.
For the first few weeks post operatively, he plans to minimize fiber intake and gradually resume a fiber full diet that he was previously used to. It is going well so far.

I had colon resection 08/12 and have bouts of diarrhea..I find it is mostly with dairy products..I wasn't told to watch my diet..had a colon mass that was ? cancerous..glad to wake up every day..just need to monitor my diet better..I have pizza occasionally..my favorite..I think it is case by case..you must document what foods irritate and avoid them when possible..it just takes knowledge to survive this
