My mother has terrible anxiety. She lives in a constant fear, she worries about future too much, she cries a lot and she feels miserable. This is all followed with pain attacks. Last several weeks she has been going to some psychotherapy. She has been using benzodiazepines before, but now she is on diazepam. Are benzodiazepines the same as diazepam?

Benzodiazepines belong to a group of sedatives and hypnotics. Diazepam is basically benzodiazepine. It produces sedation (small dosage). With bigger amounts, it induces sleepiness. Diazepam is a benzodiazepine with long lasting effects. It is often prescribe to people with extreme anxiety and with depressive patients. They should be effective, my father has been using it for almost three years now and they did help him a lot.
