I would like to know more about the medications for autoimmune hepatitis. My brother in law has recently been diagnosed and I was surprised to learn that they gave him prednisone. I always thought that all prednisone was is just a general anti inflammatory medication. Autoimmune hepatitis definitely sounds more serious to me! Isn’t there a more specific drug for this?

The medication your brother in law is on seems about right. Often, prednisone and azathioprine are used in combination to slow down the immune system of the patient in different ways. Is your brother in law getting both of these? Various doses can be used, and in fact some people with autoimmune hepatitis need not take any medication at all. Hope that helps.
