I've been reading all the posts here and most are very helpful. Some are a little scary.. :-(  I'm awaiting surgery after the Holidays, for severe spinal stenosis with radiculopathy (excruciating leg pain)  I've already got a partial fusion going on...did it all by itself, so a fusion is expected. I'm writing down everyone's suggestions as to what to do post-op, but I've got 1 problem that I really can't seem to find a solution for.  I live alone and I have 2 cats. The problem I have is...how in the world can I clean out the litter box without bending over?? I live alone and have a daughter who is very busy with her family, so I can't expect her to come over every day to clean it out. Most of my friends either don't live nearby, or don't drive, so they're no help that way.  I'm pretty creative...when my left leg was so weak I couldn't pick it up, I created all sorts of ways to do things, but I just can not figure out how to clean out the cat littler box, so I am really hoping someone will have a suggestion. Has anyone had this problem and what did you use to do it?? I know I'm not allowed to bend...but can I bend sideways?? Like sit in a chair and bend sideways to get down to it...(probably not, huh?) Any suggestions would be so helpful. Thank so much !

Finished my laminectomy 3 weeks ago.Have one cat myself, I get on my knees to clean them out. To actually empty the entire box., I just ask for help from whom ever will help (not supposed to lift more than 23-30 lbs). Do not bend sideways, my post surgical instructions listed that as a big no-no.

I have agreed to have a laminectomy as the  surgeon says that my back is too tight for any injections. I am not in pain all the time down my right leg, just if I try to do longish walks or stand waiting for long periods.

I have read most of your threads and I am concerned that I might end up worse than I am.

Also I live on my own and am 67. Nobody seems to have made a full recovery in the 6 weeks my surgeon advises the recovery time may be!!!

Please advuse!!!!

I had a lamenectomy four weeks ago and am now recovering well. Speaking from a post operative point, you will not be able to bend. Even after 4 weeks, I find it hard to bend and try not to. I would suggest elevating the cat's litter box onto a higher box, or low table as cats can climb/jump. Then place a chair next to the table so that you can clean it at a sitting level. Even though I am doing well with mobility any extra things that I do end up having a lasting painful effect that takes time to overcome. I have been told over and over that the recovery for this is slow so set yourself up before you have the surgery so that you have everything at arms reach. This may mean placing all the pots you need on the counter, etc. One never thinks of these things until they can't access them. Another thing you should ensure that you have in place is a chair for the bathtub as you won't be able to stand right away and sitting on the tub chair really helps keep your independence. Good luck with the surgery and hope it all goes well.
