you have no idea what your talking about. if your pregnant on methadone YOU CAN NOT GET OFF. the baby will die. why dont u people do some research befor typing a bunch of stuff that is wrong. and its not meth. and no they dont just take the baby home. wrong AGAIN. they make sure in the hospital for a few weeks that they are comfortable and pain free and dont go home untill the METHADONE is completely out of the systom.

I unfortunately had my twins while still on my methadone prescription and they have had no effects short term or long term. They are now 3 and a half so you shouldn't have any problems.

Thats not true i've raised 3 beautiful children 1 who had addiction to heroin when born and 2 who were born on methadone. The child born on heroin went through hell for weeks with high pitched screaming and shaking but the twins born on methadone were born with no effects and were the same as any other babies in that ward. I may be lucky but they have had no long term problems at all either.

You may speak from personal experience as to mothers not being able to take care of their children while on methadone, but you can not stereotype everyone on methadone that way. I am an addictions counselor, work on a methadone program, and used methadone as a tool to get clean. I have now been clean for 3 years and have never nodded out when I was on methadone, never used any other drugs with it and was totally compliant with everything the program required me to do. It is a 50/50 chance that a baby will experience withdrawals from methadone and the hospital will help them detox if it is necessary. Please take the time to do some research on this issue and talk to medical professionals concerning this issue to educate yourself so others do not get misinformed from your comments.

im not trying to be negative but you cant kepp saying to ppl that there are no long term effects. your not a doctor. and most babies born on methadone have withdraws. some do some dont and the dose has nothing to do with it. like the woman said she had a baby taking 20 mlg and he was fine. thats great but it has nothing to do with your dose.

WOW!!! I am anadvicate and a 8 year Vetran on the METHADONE Program...Babies are NOT BORN addicts and the withdrawld fom methadone are crankyness and sleeplessness and the consatant need to suckle...think colic baby...same thing! if the babies WERE born Methadone DEPENDANT, the hospital would NEVER...BY LAW...have let them leave without the proper treatment.medhelpman85, u dunno wth ur saying, have 2 girls born methadone dependant and they are both normal...Methadone has NO KNOWN or REPORTED long term effects on babies or children.

I'm an NICU registered RN, I see lots of "opiate" addicted babies, babies addicted to methadone. It's the saddest experience I have to relive every other day. I come home and cry on daily basis watching these infants struggle with breathing, tremors, seizures, eating, hearing, cold sweats, and everything else someone with a withdrawal goes through it's sad.
You girls really should use birth control with your addiction- what amazes me is, the drugs or methadone that could cause withdrawl, learning developments, slow growth, mental retardation or even death, you really can't be that naive and believe this doesn't and won't happen, because ladies it does. Do your innocent baby a favor and give your child up for adoption soon as he/she comes out, to someone who deserves to have that precious innocent life in their lives, if none of you are smart enough to not get pregnant when your an addict your far from being smart enough to provide a loving, stable, mature environment for a child....

You are so right...and I admire your honesty in talking about your first pregnancy. Many try to cover up there problem and make excuses for how their baby was born, you said the complete truth about it all which to me makes you even a better mom. You know your mistakes and they are in the past and your a good mom now, that is all that matters. I am 35 and have never been able to have a baby until now. I was addicted to pain meds for over 5 yrs. and I have been off them for 4 1/2 yrs now. With the help of methadone. Never being able to conceive, I never imagined I would be one to be having a baby on methadone, but I am, a boy, and I am so greatful to be given this chance. I think he will be fine and hope he is as lucky as your twins were. God Bless!

I don't have the child yet. I am a foster parent who was called to take this little girl if they find more than methadone in her system. She's in the NICU now and has been detoxed. At this time I don't have any more information, but I will tell you as much as I'm allowed.

I don't want to scare anyone but I need to know....My sister in law had a baby when she was on methadone and the Dr told her the baby would be fine....well that was not true that poor kid went though hell my wife and I had her and the baby come live with us after she was born because she had to be given liquid morphine and they didn't trust the mother with the drug... the hospital called childrens aid and they would not let her have the baby on her own. My sister in law was not a crack or meth head she got addicted to oxy that her Dr gave her for pain, for years she got them.....so anyway they wanted to take her baby NO SH&T...so if you don't have someone that will take you and your baby in you better start looking for someone... The poor kid has had nothing but hell for a life she has a joint problem that is so bad she has to have injections weekly and they hurt like hell and she can't walk very much or chew food very long because of the pain and this year is her first year in school ........she is 4 and has the joints of a 80 year old it makes me cry some days......So if you are into any drugs please use a condom or the pill you can get these for free if you look into it.......hope this helps anybody.....if you know anyone that has the same issues please reply to me on here....

I hate when people say your baby is born addicted to methadone. This is not the case. There are so many different contributing factors, addiction is associated with behavioral issues. Babies are born dependent this is very different. What people need to realize is that if the mother continues to use, it's the withdrawal that will liket kill the infant. Methadone is the only chance the baby will have. It keeps things steady so the mom can have a healthy pregnancy. She can eat healthy, sleep properly and not every baby will go through withdrawal. Methadone is very safe and it saves people's lives. What people need to remember, is that there are most likely more contributing factors, like the mother is still using other drugs while on methadone, not taking her prenatals, smoking. Some drugs can go undetected ... Trust me I know. Yes aim a pregnant mother on methadone, but one thing I even had to convince myself was just because I got pregnant does not mean my addiction just goes away. I took it as an opportunity to get my life back, and be healthy for this lovely new miracle about to bless my life . I am happy to say I am almost 7 months clean and am carrying a very healthy baby. I just feel if people were more educated on the iruation, there would be less biased opinions.......

She was using methadone as a booster, I'm on it and do not get high from it. I take it solely to get better. Just because your cousin abused it does not mean this medication does not help other people. I have been able to maintain my sobriety and am carrying a very healthy baby, please don't say this medication is so bad, when there are people who take it that just wanted a chance at.
