My daughter has been an addict for 10 years. Her latest is methodone. Today she gave birth to a 5 lb. 11 oz daughter that began trembles within 3 hours of birth. Within 5 hours, the baby is placed in NICU and given methodone to reduce the withdrawals. How can anyone say that taking methodone while pregnant isn't harmful to the fetus? If you would have seen the baby trembling uncontrollably with high pitched screaming no one would feel this way. It was obvious to all families that gazed at this newborn through the window that she had a severe problem.
My daughter leaves her baby at the hospital tomorrow without a plan for her addition. Probability is she will loose custody of her baby and within 3 to 4 years her daughter will have behavioral problems along with mental disorders.
Methodone should be illegal. You are substituting one drug for another. Why not get 'high' on the blessings of life instead. It would make a happier homecoming for all.

Honestly mother who can say that taking methadone while pregnant is okay, or that your child will be okay needs there head checked. If it was healthy for children to be born on this substance would we all be on it. People need to get their lives sorted out before bringing little innocent babies into this world, on drugs. It is interesting to see that people find reasons that things that are wrong are alright. Having a child addicted to a controlled substance is wrong. What a way to bring a baby into this world.

My son was 9 lbs 1 ounce and was born on Methadone. I have chronic post Spinal fusion pain and was not planning on gettoing pregnant and I did. I prayed every moment of every day that my son would not have any withdrawals and He did NOT! I was presribed mthadone like 120mg and in one month was taking 20 mg. I know you are probably thinkin how did she do it, but I did. MY son was eating the second he came out. They monitired him and sent him home in three days. I was one of the luck ones though. Everybody body is different you can take 10 mg and your baby can come out with withdrawals it just does. I have to say if you can go down slowly it is worth it. I now have a huge 15 month old and he is great!!

my brother and his wife had beautiful baby boy JORDAN, he was born addicted to methadone, meth, and so many different kinds of pain pills i can't remember. he will be coming to live with us in about two weeks. he is now three months old and is still on feeding tube (G tube). what should we prepare for??????? someone please tell me your story!!!!

You need to prepare yourself for a potentially very irritable baby. It does not happen in all cases, but be ready for it. You should ask to have him followed by physiotherapy/ OT and a pediatrician to ensure he meets his milestones or for early intervention if needed.
The hardest part I found after we adopted our little boy was not being able to console him for the 1st month of his life. Just remember love and attention can help tremendously. It makes me sick that poor innocent children have to suffer from withdrawal from their very first seconds on earth due to parents who are irresponsible (getting high and getting pregnant=irresponsible). There are free clinics everywhere that offer family planning counseling, various forms of birth control and abortions for free or almost free.
I guess these people were too busy getting their next bag or bundle to give a c**p about that, though. What a sad way to enter this world.

my son was also born with a methadone addiction. i too was told to remain on methadone and not to reduce. this was 5years ago and i still have problems with his behaviour. he is very active, doesnot listen and cannot sit still. as for the post on how us addicts mothers were too busy with our next fix to be concerned to take the pill, i was taking the pill and fell pregnant. due to being on meth and did not have regular periods so was not aware i was pregnant until i was 5 months pregnant. i am now clean but still on methadone. i love my son more then anything and have done everything to prove i have changed yet i still cannot stift the brush ive been tarred with.why should someone who knows nothing about addiction be able to pass judgement on me? if anyone knows of the longlasting effets on these children please contact me. also if anyone needs advice i have been there and am living proof youy can get through it, you just have to keep on going. you know if your doing right by your child.

We both got to a level dose and started to come down, i went to 85 and am now at 22mgs, my bf is now in college to be an early childhood educator and i have been working full time for the last year and a half, methodone has turned both of our lives around and without it we would be dead or in jail and definitly still using!
I just found out i am pregnant and my doctor has informed me that there is no long term effects my baby will be born dependant on methodone and will have to stay in the hospitol for a week or 2 but he has informed me that babies cope fine with it, I visit the clinic with several other people on methadone and the majority of them still use dope, there is a big difference between a baby being weined off of a monitored amount of methodone and a baby being wiened off of methodone and an unknown amount of dope.

wow...My son was born on methadome he is almost two years old now and there is NOTHING wrong with him and there never was....that c**p about the babies going through it no way as long as the hospital does what its suppossed to do they will not feel a thing and they gave my son morphine and something else and weened him off it for thirty days and let me tell you he was the happiest baby ever never cried ate all the time...you couldnt even tell and the methadome did pass through my placenta so whoever is saying their baby went through all this obvioulsy has not been telling the whole truth or they dont have a good doctor or a hospital. I am having another son in two months on methadome again and I have no worries once so ever I have been on it for five years.

I had twins after being on a methadone programme for 2 years and because i was on a steady amount both babies suffered no withdrawals at all. They are now 2 years old and are like any normal baby and had no difficultys whatsoever.
Apparently methadone withdrawals would have occured if my dose had been erratic.

It does not cause birth defects,but the withdrawals are the same for an infant as it is for an adult . The infant just cant sit up and tell you what hurts . IT'S SELFISH! I do know about addictions, and the control that it has. However, talk to anyone that has been off for a while and they will tell you . If you are still addicted to anything ,Its out of fear of the unknown,or selfishness that you only care about yourself and noone else matters ,or just weakness, someone not strong enough to stand on your on two feet. Addiction is hard I understand that . But please do the REAL RESEARCH dont go by what the clinics tell you THEY LIE!

I had a healthy baby boy on Nov.15, and i took methadone my whole pregnancy.. He eats great, isn't very fussy, and is bright-eyed as can be!! He is doing great actually!! The nurses and doctors are slowly weaning him off methadone, and he seems to be fine.. I see that ALOT of people judge moms who took methadone while prego, but truth be known, i was told to stay on my dose because if i chose to detox, then i could possibly miscarry or go into early labor.. So, my husband and I decided to have our baby while i was on methadone because our little boy deserved to be in this world!! :-) He is our whole life!! Our pride and joy!! He was born perfectly healthy with good lungs, a good heart, and at a good weight.. He is like any other baby with his actions and cries when he's hungry or needing his diaper changed.. I don't understand why people judge and slur others who are trying to help themselves.. But those people may be fighting their own battles, and slur others to take the focus off of themselves.. We LOVE our son more than anything in this world!! I had been on methadone for about 6 months already when we found out i was pregnant, so we didn't have many options other than to research methadone in babies, and do the best we could during pregnancy.. I ate right, slept enough, drank 2-3 Boost or Ensures a day, and i feel like that may have helped him in some ways.. But he really is a normal healthy baby boy, and we are so grateful we have him in our lives!!!! He truly is the highlight and the sunshine of our lives!! :-) I love my husband and my son with all my heart, and wouldn't have it any other way!! :-) Our little family feels whole now that we have a sweet bright eyed child in it!!

I don't think someone that hasn't been addicted to methadone should be telling people that are what to do. The message I read saying it is perfectly safe to come off it in the second trimester is completely rubbish and any doctor will tell you that and not because of money but because they are worried for the safety of the baby. If you happen to fall pregnant when addicted to methadone to save suffering a miscarriage or an early labour you should stay on the same dose throughout the pregnancy as i did with my twins.
I have had a baby whilst on heroin and the twins whilst on methadone and the difference was immense. My son who was born when I was addicted to heroin suffered with withdrawals and was put on morphine for 10 days and my twins who were born with me taking 80mls of methadone daily were born on time and had no withdrawal symptoms whatsoever.

When I got pregnant with my son, I went strictly by the book. I wouldnt even drink caffiene. Now at 14, he is autistic, bipolar, has ADHD and constantly stays in trouble with the law and in school. A few years after he was born, I was diagnosed with Cancer and also had a pacemaker put in my heart. I was prescribed Methadone combined with Oxycontin for all the pain. A few years later, I got pregnant with my daughter. She was born at 24 weeks weighing only 1 lb 11 ozs NOT because of the medications, but because I developed Toxemia and my blood pressure was so high I had a stroke. They did an emergency c section. She had no complications at all. She is now 8 years old and in perfect health. She makes straight A's and has recently been tested as "gifted". IF I had taken any kind of medications while pregnant with my son, I honestly would have committed suicide from all the guilt. But I can honestly say that there is nothing I could have done any better. So, women should never beat themselves up over things like this. It makes me so very angry when I read comments from people who say that "women who take medications should not have the right to have babies"! Just because I had Cancer does not mean I shouldnt have the privilege of having babies. I shouldnt be deprived for that reason. God has a plan for everyone. I believe everything happens for a reason. Im sure that some babies do have complications from medications. But some babies, like my son, are born with complications as well even though I went through my pregnancy doing exactly what I was suppose to do. Both of my children are blessings. I wouldnt have it any other way. For those people who say I didnt have the right to have children really should check themselves. Its all up to God. In the end, only HE will judge us anyways.
