Well said. I am a forster/adoptive parent of 2 children born addicted. I am fearful of the road ahead but determined to love them as my own and hopefully raise happy, heathy, productive members of society. It is a selfish act to use and bring a child into this world, especially to leave them after due to the problems they have that you (birth mother/addict) created. For every 1 person that methadone helps there are countless others just using the system. Most children left in these situations have many siblings demonstrating that again mom is being selfish and has not learned from her mistake. Many states pay for sterilization.... if you choose a life of drugs please choose a life without children - ruin your life, not new ones.

Just to let you know as I've had 4 children on methadone ages 18, 14, and 5 year old twins and it's NOT a 60% to 80% chance of the baby having withdrawals it's actually a 50/50 chance. "Most" which I actually thought ALL hospitals have a 5 day mandatory stay for wemon who are on Methadone/Suboxone/Subtext or any meds for that matter. I've took Methadone for a long time due to I have Lupus now I'm not ashamed to say I first began methadone because I was an Addict, however once I was diagnosed with Lupus I was moved to a pain Management center with all that said hospital do a NAS scoring system in newborns that are born "dependant" as newborns can not be born addicts. My 18 year old was born on 85mlgs of methadone and went through absolutely no withdrawals and she is very smart she graduated at age 16 and is in her 2nd year of Vet college. My 14 year old is in 9th grade and she too is very smart. I was on 60mlgs of methadone with her and she had no withdrawals either. My twins were born 6 weeks and 4 days early and I was on 40mlgs with them they done really good up until day 5 and the Dr. did medicate them with .01 mlgs of methadone 3 times a day then on day 7 they went to .01mlgs 2 times a day then on day 9 they was put on 1 time a day then once they weighted 5 pounds which was day 11 they was sent home with their meds and when I took them for a check up a week after they was sent home the doctor told me they had outgrown their dose to take them off which I was scared to do but did what he told me and they done just fine. I breastfed all 4 of my children while on methadone up until they was 2 years old. When I started methadone it was the beginning of my life my husband and I planned all our children but the twins and I can literally say methadone saved my life and has made me the woman, mom and wife I am today as a RECOVERING ADDICT! ***this post is edited by moderator *** *** posting of web addresses or advertising them is not allowed*** Please read our Terms of Use

Babies CAN NOT be born addict ONLY dependant. Addiction is a diesase so do you mind if I ask you if wemon with Type 1 Dibeties (which is cause by over eating) not have children either? Or what about wemon with Bi-poler maybe they should be sterile as well. It kills me to hear wemon or anyone talk about methadone and addiction like they know what their talking about because they have an addict in their family, do some research before you make such awful statements first and foremost if person you was talking about goes to a methadone clinic and takes benzos they would be detoxed and eventually kicked off the program due to the rapid numbers of overdoses that go hand and hand with benzos and methadone so I can't believe they are going to a Methadone clinic and taking xanex at the same time. When I started methadone almost 20 years ago my life had just began and since then I've had 3 pregnancies and 4 amazing girls 2 which were planned my 18 and 14 year old have absolutely no side effects from ME being on methadone they don't smoke and my 18 year old could careless about parties because she to concerned with her 2nd year of college. I've also got 5 year old twins which was born on methadone also not planning but yet a very great blessing for God that I couldn't be happier to of had. They too have no problems all 4 of my "methadone babies" speak Spanish and English very well. As long as someone is ready to become a Recovering addict it doesn't matter weather they choose to Recover with the aid of methadone/Suboxone or Subtext or just plain cold turkey it's all Recovery as for having children every woman should have the option to have a child some times a child could change a womans whole prospective on life and sometimes it won't. It's all in the values and morals you instill in your children during the process of them growing up. I know I'm not a perfect parent as NO ONE IS but I know as I type this right now still taking my methadone today not only for my addiction but yet for my Lupus and Fibromyalgia too that I do my best daily to raise my children to the best of my ability!

WRONG!!!! A newborns chance of having withdrawals is 50/50 not 60 to 80 percent not to mention a baby doesn't become an addict they are dependant such as people that have to take meds due to Bi-poler or Type 1 Dibeties that rely on insulin. I've had 3 pregnancies and 4 children on methadone. My life began once I got stable on methadone and I wasn't going to stop living this wonderful chance at life I've been giving. I have a group on FB about mother's on methadone and Suboxone and actually there's alot of older children that was born on methadone/Suboxone and with what research I've gathered there's been NO long term outcome. My children that ive had while on methadone are ages 18, 14, and 5 year old twins. My 18 year old graduated at age 16 and is in her 2nd year old college to become a vet. My 14 year old is a A and B honor roll 9th grader. Then my 5 year old twins which are in kindergarten even though they turned 5 in October Because they took a pre test and past to go on up to kindergarten. Once a newborn gets over their dependacy at birth there is NO SCIENTIFIC FACTS showing it harms them as they get older ACTUALLY studies show that methadone babies tend to be more smart. But I believe it in how they are raised. My 18 year old don't drink don't smoke and don't club she's not perfect but I can say I'm one blessed mom because she works hard to get through college. I really think before people on these threads start calling people ignorante they should maybe stop saying ignorant things and back up what they are saying with scientific facts. I have ***this post is edited by moderator *** *** posting of web addresses, FB groups, private e-mails is not allowed*** *** all questions should be discussed on our website *** Please read our Terms of Use. If methadone is keeping you in Recovery you go. No one can tell you have to Recover you have to do what you have to do to stay Sober! Shame on you for calling people ignorant but not having any facts to back up your comment.

Here in North Carolina you can go to a Methadone clinic for "addiction" and pain Management Because now a days doctors are getting scared to write methadone so they are sending their patients that are prescribed methadone to clinics. I use to go to a clinic for addiction then after I was diagnosed with Lupus I was sent to a pain Management specialist because I had been on methadone for so long that was almost 8 years ago. Now my doctor wants to keep decreasing my dose because of state medical laws changing up here therefore I just started a methadone clinic this past Thursday. But your more likely to get in a clinic from going to a pain Management doctor than vice versa because people that are on pain Management are definitely dependant on their medicine which in turn when they don't have it can turn into an addiction.

Lady you don't have a clue she was obviously already pregnant and I've had doctor after doctor verify the fact that it is healthy to stay on it while you're pregnant no it's not ideal but that is a very awful thing to say about your daughter-in-law you shouldn't judge others like that unless you'd like to be judged like that yourself I'm sure you're not perfect she's not being selfish she's doing the best thing she knows how to do

I was on pain management and was getting off that when I became pregnant and just like your daughter I was advised to get on methadone to prevent any issues with my baby. The doctors wouldn’t allow me to finish my taper while pregnant. I listened to the doctor because I would do anything I had to do to make sure my baby was okay. Once my son was born he stole my heart. They told me to watch for withdrawal symptoms which I did like a hawk. I remember That moment when I First saw he had a runny nose. I knew he needed to stay in the hospital. My heart broke. I held him and cried for awhile then I pushed the bottom for the nurse. I handed my son to her and said “ he needs help” she knew exactly what I meant and cried with me. He was there for 3 weeks. Yes that was an awful moment in our lives. I held him skin to skin and was there every single moment I could be. I would go home to sleep for a few hours and go right back into the hospital. They wouldn’t allow me to close my eyes while there so I was getting very little sleep. I knew holding my son and letting him know I was there would help him through this terrbible thing I put him through. I was breastfeeding which helped tremendously. Even after all of that my son is the happiest baby ever. He isn’t an only child and I don’t see any difference in him compared to any of his siblings that weren’t born to this awful methadone withdrawal. I don’t know what kind of care your grandson received from the hospital or what happened during the pregnancy but I do know stress can cause an infant to be a very fussy baby. All I’m saying is there are other factors that could lead to what he’s going through. Maybe with or without this obstacle he was just going to have colic. In my experience I had a healthy happy baby from day 1. We made him comfortable and helped get him through this awful moment. That was my experience and I wanted to share another story related to methadone without judgement. Hugs to u all.

A man. Thank you. I hate it when people talk when they don't know what they're saying. If you go cold turkey there's a high chance you'll lose the baby before it's born. So getting on methadone SAVES BABIES LIVES

Methadone does not make you high, unless you are a person who was addicted in the first place. You are an ignorant person who shouldn't be commenting on something you do not know about.
