Hi, I am a first time mother and this motherhood thing is very new to me. I try to deal with every situation rationally and calmly. Last week I started to notice my baby's hiccups. I was not alarmed at first, but as the time passes I am more and more concerned. Can you tell me what causes the baby's hiccups? I am also worried because sometimes the hiccups last up to half an hour. What can I do to help my baby?

Hi, you have nothing to worry about. Hiccups are a normal occurrence with the newborns. The reason why the baby hiccups happen more often at this stage in life is not quite determined. The doctors agree that it has to do with the intestinal organs development. Your baby is not harmed with the hiccups in any way. Chances are that they bother you more than they bother your baby. The only thing you can do is to try to distract the baby with some kind of activity during the hiccups episodes. This will help both you and the baby.
