I took Bactrim last year and had this issue with my tongue. I did a little research and many people suggested gargling with pure coconut oil. I did that and after 2 days everything was back to normal. Then last week my doctor gave me Bactrim again. I was supposed to take it for 10 days, but I stopped after 3 because my tongue was on fire and I couldn't taste anything. Doing the coconut oil again.

This is an old post, but I thought I would comment. When this happened to me, it started with a reduced pressure sensation on my teeth (numb teeth), then progressed the tongue, mouth and lips that was numb, tingling, burning and caused the skin to slough off multiple times a day. I liken it to Burning Mouth Syndrome or some type of Steven Johnsons or Sjogrens.......but triggered by Bactrim. It took 3 pills. It lasted over a year before I could brush normally or even eat ketchup or salad dressings. Everything was too spicy for the tender, raw skin inside my mouth and on my lips. Dentist was torture because if the skin dried, the pain was 100 x's worse and with your mouth open...drying happened. Bad news, this is an extreme reaction and didnt resolve quickly. Good news, I feel about normal now but it took a year or so. Bad news, I still cannot eat actual spicy food.
I took bactrim for a UTI, with this reaction, in 2008ish.
I then reacted to all the Pennicilin family of drugs, NSAIDS, and other random meds going from no allergies to a long list over the next 10 yrs including a reduced ability to get numb with local anesthesia.
I have no answers. I just want you to know it's not in your head like my Doctor told me in 2008. And it can lead the way for other random things...but you are not crazy, regardless what the doctors think.

I was prescribed bactrim for a sinus infection. The 1st time I took it for 5 days it just made my stomach hurt. Last week I took 1 pill and 5 hrs after I woke w a fever and my skin feeling like it was on fire. Doctor said it can't cause a fever to keep taking maybe side effects will go away. I didn't take anymore bc I wanted to rule out having the flu or was it a side effect. I took half a pill bc I was scared 3 hrs ago. So far my tongue feels like I burnt it on hot chocolate but I haven't had any food or drink since taking. Hoping I don't have anymore side effects but reading all this makes me question continuing this medicine
