My brother has some strange condition that is called Bell's palsy syndrome. His face is totally paralyzed. He can't even close his eyes. His mouth is half open like he is showing his teeth. As I understand this syndrome affects only one half of the face. But he has it on both sides. Doctor has mentioned something about bilateral Bell's palsy. How common is that? What cause it?

Your brother is probably suffering from the rare kind of Bell's palsy syndrome, bilateral Bell's palsy. It is extremely rare condition when both side of face are affected. Only few percent of patients with bell's palsy develop bilateral bell's palsy. It may be caused by mononucleosis, the flu, leukemia, lyme disease, sarcoidosis and mycoplasma pneumoniae.
