Hello, I have a question about blood glucose control as related to hormonal changes. There are times of the month when I absolutely lose BG control. I'm a type 1 and just before during and after my period my BG levels go crazy. I did a little research but I really couldn't find anything. Is my period doing this or could there be another cause. I know my hormone levels are different around that time so I was thinking that affects sugar levels. Does anyone know? Are there any ladies out there that have had this experience? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, Gee, I'm glad that someone else has this problem. I thought I was going crazy. I have had great difficulty in trying to stabilize my BG. I've found that my BG goes up rapidly just before, goes low during the period and stabilizes afterwards. When I got married, I took the birth control pill and initially I thought that might stabilize everything. To my chagrin it didn't and in fact, my BG was even more erratic. I found that I had to alter my insulin amounts. A few days before my period I had to just about double my insulin dose and then at the end of my period, I needed 25 percent less. Then a few days later I was back to my normal dose. It took me a while to figure this out but I got there. I really can't tell you why or how this is happening other than it does. This really became a hassle for me with the kids, work and my husband. I talked with my doctor and he suggested that I get a pump. A few months later I got a pump and that took care of everything. If you can afford, I suggest you get a pump.
