i had undergone external hemorrhoidectomy feb 25, 2017. and i am now at my 1st week of recovery.. yes the first day was hell painful.. i even cried twice for the painrelievers wean off fast.. but after taking hot sitz bath 3x the dawn of the ff morning, i was relieved and was able to sleep.. the pain was also bearable.. i went home that morning as well.. and the pain each day had become tolerable.. i had bm even after the surgery which is passing out gas.. thats normal since the night before the surgery i had undergone enema.. at day 4, i was able to pass my stool.. with blood.. and i wont be hypocrite saying that it was not painful.. it was, but the hot sitz bath helped a lot.. at day 6 i had bm 2x, and that was the most painful bm experience ive had.. even i have had the stool softener.. but again after passing it out, thanks to hot sitz bath and i was able to tolerate its after effect.. honestly, ive been scared of what could happen for the next next days.. because of the things and experiences seen in this page, but since i have had already was experiencing it this moment i cam say DO NOT BELIEVE in such horror stories.. sometimes we just have to believe in our self and have some guts to move forward.. remember, hot sitz bath+light pain reliever+hygiene+walking+faith = good healing :)

Just suggestions.
Do not take too much fiber or stool softemera. U can go from too firm to diarrhea and end up burning from that. Disagree about ice packs. Use them between ur cheeks. Just don't use a ton of ice. It helps to numb the pain. Sleep on ur side. Support your knees and keep them apart so that ur backside isn't straining. Sits bath yes but warm bath and then blow dry yourself dry. Use cooler setting. Just keep a tshirt on and nothing else. Lay towels where u will lay down. Let urself be exposed to air. Your skin will heal faster that way. For itching use hydrocortisone or ask for nystatin. If that doesn't work use miconazole. OTC. It gets rid of yeast infections and u can easily get one if u stay moist and dirty. Use mineral oil sparingly. U can get diarrhea but it really does help. If u can stand while defecating it helps. When u feel that first BM try not to strain but do give an initial push on your bowels and then breathe and relax. Keep breathing and relaxing. Don't fight it. It may well be painful but it usually is quick if u are not constipated. Do not use heat for protracted periods of time. U will intensify swelling by drawing blood into the heated area and it will whiplash on you. Alternate with small ice packs. Try to walk a reasonable distance as soon as u can. Helps move bowels and keeps u moving. DO NOT lift! U really must allow body to heal. The stitches allow the wound to remain open. Reason is to allow discharge to drain from wound. If they completed sewed it up it could get seriously infected. Try not to use tissue. Baby wipes and if u can keep them warm, then even better. Use witch hazel if u continue to have rawness. Will help in healing. Don't stay on stool softerners forever. Ur normal sized poops will help your spinchter and anus to return to normal size. Scarring can create tightness and u don't want that. Eating properly goes a long way to moving your bowels without a lot of pushing. Quick exit of BM helps in lessening fear. Realize u likely won't have a BM the first day. Your anus is vey swollen and will stay that way for awhile. take ur meds. Just don't use more than prescribed. If u r sensitive to the constipating effect of opiates u will be SORRY. and for those who can't handle opiates easily like me. Use antacid or small amount of pepto to coat your tummy. Vomiting and the downward pressure it causes is NOT fun! Good luck to all!

Tried Lidocaine and it did not work. Could not take pain pills as they were constipating. My friend works for a dentist and had me take 4 600-800 ibuprofen or Advil or Motrin and 2 extra strength Tylenol. That helped but I didn't want to do that more then a few days. I was in such pain the first 3 weeks. I am a month into it and the urge to have a BM every time I stand up or walk is so annoying. Not to mention it still hurts. My doctor says another 6-8 weeks to full recovery. One day at a time. I do take stool softeners every PM and often a dose of Miralax for breakfast. I appreciate reading everyone's blog and knowing I am not alone in this very painful, slow and long recovery.
