I had a hemorrhoidectomy 3 1/2 weeks ago. Internal and external were removed. The pain was excruciating for the first two weeks. I only took 3 opioid pain killers - the night I got home for the hospital and then 2 more spaced by 6 hrs. Honestly they didn’t help. After that I alternated 2 Extra Strength Tylenol and 4 Advil - spaced by 6 hrs. You must be careful never to take more that 2 Tylenol at a time and never more than 6 In 24 hrs. The 4 Advil helped with the swelling. The other thing that helped enormously was sitting in a warm tub. I took a Sitz bath after almost every bm to reduce the excruciating pain but one you get a bit past the bm pain - sit in a warm tub for an hour or two.

I still have some pain with bms but not nearly as bad. I stopped all med a week ago because I read that Tylenol and Advil can also contribute to constipation. I tried taking Metamucil and Benefiber but they gave me a lot of gas. A few times I took Magnesium Citrate tablets (400 mg.) at night which brought on a morning BM but I don’t want my body to become dependent on these things. Problem is even if I have a loose stool and go, I don’t feel like my bm is complete which leave some stool low close to my stitches, putting pressure there. That’s the big issue - feeling like I have to have a bm, sitting on potty frustrated that nothing more will come out. Also I don’t want to sit on potty to create new hemorrhoids. I plan to go back to the doctor 8 weeks post surgery so he won’t say it’s early u need more time to heal.

Also - after the first two weeks when the pain wasn’t as fierce I was exhausted. I usually run around all day and was never so tired. I think the trauma to the body exhausted me. Like the doctor who performed the surgery and the other doctor I went to for a consultation said - you will be laid-up for 4-6 weeks! I am very fit and strong and thought - no way, not me. Truth is I can see it taking that long to get the whole what to eat, GI part of the equation right. That’s the issue this isn’t just healing from the surgery it is also getting the GI system back to normal.

Good luck - once you get past the 2 week mark things will get much better! Sit on the sitz bath and go in the tub!

I just jad surgery 4 days ago almost 5. I still haven't pooped yet, but have had the urge. I've been in a liquid diet for the most part. Seems like the first couple days was easy then it gets tougher, not to much pain, more uncomfortable than anything. Don't be scared, it will all pass amd youll be happy you did. I know i already am. I've had stage 3 roids for seven or eight years ill take this lil bit of pain over another seven years of those buggers!

Oh my gosh! I am 9 days post op and although the pain is a “little” better, I too only have found comfort in sitting on a hard chair or stool. I’m having such a hard time with my BMs. I try not to strain but it hurts so bad and only a little comes out at a time and I get up and lay down but I can feel there’s so much in there and it won’t cone out. I’ve given birth naturally, had kidney stones, emergency gallbladder surgery and this is BY FAR the most pain I’ve ever experienced! I had no idea the recovery would be this bad! I am regretting this decision for surgery, I have 3 little ones and I can barely take care of them. I was told I would be sore for a few days, yeah right!

I agree about the “pain”! This is my third day post surgery, my first BM! I could never imagine the pain.
Thanks for the post, at least I know I am going the right direction.

Make sure your DR approves ice...not always good depending on type of surgery. BEST advice is to get up and walk as much as you can...until the pain forces you back to bed. Then get up and walk some more as soon as you can, even if only 20 steps. You'll heal twice as fast and quickly become less dependent on drugs and stool softners. Hope this helps.
