I wonder how you all are doing now. I have had pain off and on the past couple of years from what looks to be a spur on the ball of my foot. I didn't really pay much attn until recently when it started hurting when I didn't wear pumps. Now it looks like I have to deal with it %-)
I feel for the woman with small children. I have 2 dogs that need walking twice a day and one that has arthritis, needing to get to the water for some additional swimming. I wonder if a cane would work better than the crutches for mobility??

I'm a 33 yr old female who had the hallux rigidus surgery on 07/11/08 on my right foot. The surgeon said it would be about 3-4 day recovery and I would be back on my feet, even playing tennis!!!! It is going into WEEK 5 and still in a lot of discomfort and pain.
I am able to get my foot into a tennis shoe barely. My experiences are swelling and pain whenever I have my foot down for more than a few minutes. It is painful to put weight on my foot, mostly on the ball of my foot, my other toes and the inside of my foot. Doing simple things like the dishes, taking a shower and driving is just terrible. If I'm not doing any of the simple household things, I have my foot elevated. The worst is in the evening because it seems to swell more often.
This was my first week back to work and was pretty challenging getting around. I'm hobbling around without crutches. I'm not sure if it is getting better or worse. I'm doing the exercises of bending my toe back hoping this will help.
Please let me know if anyone has had similar experiences. How much more time it is going to take to be able to walk without limping and feeling pain???? Is there anything I can do to speed up the recovery time? Please help!!!

I am having the chilectomy done next month.. The dr said I could do both toes on both feet at the same time.. Is that a good ideal to do? I cannot stay off work for more than 2 weeks.

Hi, unfortunately, not better, but no worse. Terrible pain underneath big toe after standing or walking for short time, also rest of foot aches all the time, very nasty pain. Hopefully it will get better.
Thanks

i am a 49 year old, very active woman,at least up until Aug. 5th when i had bone spur surgery on the knuckle below my big toe. recovery has been horribly painful and very slow. my dr. told me recovery would be about 7-10 days! no way!! when i pressed the Dr. about the pain and swelling he told me how he drilled 6 holes in my bone to build up scar tissue to replace lack of cartilage. this, i did not sign up for! i see the dr. next Tuesday and i am not happy!! the swelling gets worse as the day goes on and sleeping at night is awful. needless to say i have not returned to my gardening business as of yet. anyone out there recovered from something similar??

I have a bone spur between the second and third toe. The pain underneath my foot is horrible and it feels like I'm walking on a huge steel marble. On the top of the foot, there is pain and swelling. my first cortisone shot lasted 2 months, but it just wore off. I am not seeing any positive outcomes from surgery to remove the spur though and it makes me apprehensive about the surgery. I'm an avid tennis player, and i worry that I won't be able to play anymore.

He (a podiatrist) told me I'd be in a boot for about 5 weeks and I wouldn't be able to play tennis for probably 2 months. I think this is unrealistic based on everything I've read about any kind of foot surgery. Would you let a podiatrist operate on your foot, or should I use an orthopedist? If anyone out there has had bone spur surgery on their toes, I'd love to hear from you. I also need a bunionectomy on that foot, but I don't want to do it.

Hi, I had the surgery on 02-07-08 and decided I'd come back for an update. I've had the orthotics made for my shoes. Basically I can only wear them with tennis shoes because they make any other type of shoe too tight to fit my foot into comfortably.
7 months after sugery and I still cannot walk for any length of time without pain. No jogging on the treadmill, no shoes except for Danskos and tennis shoes. At the end of the day,as i'm limping home, my foot is so swollen and red, it looks like I have a bunion on the side of my foot. When I had the bone spur removed from the big toe, the dr. also inserted some type of "goo" that is supposed to mimick the cartiledge that i'm missing.
I stopped the PT after 12 sessions because the dr. said it would not do anything else for my foot. She wants to do cortizone shots but i'm leary of that since i'm a type 1 diabetic. Cortizone really wreaks havoc with my blood sugars. :-( The last time I saw her, I was complaining that my foot is worse than it was prior to the surgery. She said to give it time, that it takes up to a year to fully recover. Before surgery she was saying 3 months and i'd be back to normal. I hate that I had the surgery. I would of rather waited until I was crippled. The pain is worse and shows no signs of letting up. My dr. is a podiatrist. When I go back to the dr. i'll be going to a orthopedic to see what his opinion is. In the mean time, i've developed a new walk...on the outside of my foot. :'(

I recently had foot surgery Hallux Limitus ( Chilectomy of my first MPJ on 9/29/08 :-( . I guess Im recovery nicely according to the doctor. After the first week I was off my crutches and walking. The doc told me to walk "normally" or I will cause more problems. It hurts to walk normal, but doc says it will hurt for a while. I just had surgery. My whole foot hurts when I walk / the top of my foot / where the surgery was and my heal and ankle. So i think that i really have to pay attention to how I am walking. I think that because of all the pain I have had with this foot that I may have been walking different for some time. Its like I need to be trained how to walk all over again. I find myself walking on the side of my foot or on the heel or dragging it because of the pain. My hope is that in 3 months this will just be a bad memory. I have not had any instructions to see a therapist yet, but Im considereing seeing one from what Ive read. I have to agree with whoever on this post wrote: if I knew how much pain was going to be involved i would not have had the surgery. My hope is that my big toe will eventually be able to bend, and w/out pain of course.

I just had my Chilectomy on my left foot on 10/07/08. The first two days were really bad because of the anesthesia. It made me very ill. I took the pain meds as the Dr. told me and I had very little pain. I just got off crutches yesterday. Yesterday was the first day I put any weight on the bottom of my foot and it feels numb and tingley (like it has been asleep awhile) My toe and foot are still swollen and the dr. told me I had to start bending it forwards and backwards 10 times each way 3 times aday or he will send me to PT. He told me it will really hurt bad. I just cannot bring myself to do it... Has anyone ever not done PT and they got movement back in the big toe?

I am going for an xray, this seems to be my problem. Just ran Chicago marathon w/this pain. I am hoping the surgery will fix it... but all of these posts have me concerned. I have 3 kids as well and must be able to function.
