I am a healthy 22 year old m. Currently deployed to Iraq. I have a question about one thing here. Would me being out here be causing me to act like such ways as the BPD symptoms would? I was fine before I left and now it seems that I have hit a huge wall with my fiance' and commanders. I have read many books to see if I am actually suffering from this disorder. I have been talking to a shrink and he has said I have many symptoms of this disorder. Thanks for your time and response.

BPD is a very controversial diagnosis and it's hard to say. I think that you might be acting out based on stress--it is more likely to be PTSD than anything in my opinion. Have you spoken to your therapist about that possibility?

I have spoken to him mulitiple times on this matter. PTSD was his first thought, then when I told him about my past he nearly jumped out of his chair telling me that I could have this disorder. It just scares me cause I read many many books and found this one on how to cope and deal with it. First thing you have to do is read about all these different peoples symptoms and I would think to myself that some of these could have been my life reading back to me on this book. Its just a very very scary thought that I could have this and not even know about it.

Well, as someone who was diagnosed with a serious disorder as well, I can tell you this--you are not your disorder. You are still you. YOu just have a way of coping with things a little better now. Knowing the nature of the beast is half the battle, and that will ultimately help you in becoming better adjusted.
