Do you all mean a cracking feeling - like something's just cracked or ruptured? I've had it for years, usually when I'm tired. I've never been diagnosed with any diseases, and as it's often at the top of my skull, not near the base, I don't think it could be spinal. Did anyone ever figure out what it is?

The "spine bones" do not crack. There are simple explanations as to why we hear cracking throughout our body. Why would you treat crackling in the head any different than crackling in the neck or back?

How has this become a post about psychology? The person clearly didn't ask for personal advice about being extroverted.

Exploding Sound syndrone is what its called and it is usually associated with extreme tiredness and/or sudden withdrawal from muscle relaxer medications such as to treat anxiety. Not serious, however you should tell your doctor.

I am a crackler as well. I am talking about brain crackles in the top of my head. It is like i have knuckles in my head that are crackling simultaneously. I think it has something to with anxiety. I have recently given up Marijuana and the cracking is more often. If anyone has a logical explanation for this, I would really appreciate it.

Saw some teenagers sounding worried so I'm dropping my 2 cents here.
I've had "rice crispies" in my head ever since I can remember, like kindergarten.. for me it's the normal sounds of tendons and muscles rubbing against each other, and the ear tubes opening and closing as you move. It can sound like it's coming from the base of your skull when BOTH ears hear it at the same time. I always had great hearing (beyond the "normal" range), and a very narrow jaw. If there's no pain and you're not sick, it's probably the same. If you listen real good you might hear squishy noises too, confirming that it's just normal body noises.
If doctors can't find anything it's probably because there's nothing actually wrong with you. Your ear stuff is within an inch of your neck, and sound carries through the skull pretty good.
So far nothing bad has happened. I'm a 39 y/o woman.
For older people who develop this problem, it's probably good to get checked out because it's not "normal" for you, and you might be getting some fluid buildup.

Hiya,
Im 19 but I have had a clicking in my head for many years now I describe it was a far away ticking clock but sometimes I can feel it as it clicks, Its not in tune with my heart beat so its not my blood pumping around, I once told a doctor of this she just looked at me weird and told me to keep an eye on it and if it became more frequent/started to hurt then to come back.
I have also been diagnosed with chronic tinnitus (My brain decided noise mufflers where no longer important, loud music was not the cause) and so I have decided to visit the doctors again to maybe get some answers to the ticking and see if there is any underlying illness that could account for the tinnitus, Hopefully some time soon I can come back here any let you know what I have found but for now I thought I should let you know that you are not alone :)

Hi, I am a 47 year old woman going through menopause. I just started getting this same brain crackling condition a couple months ago. I don't experience any pain as a result of the crackling-it is just annoying and a bit worrisome. The first time this occurred, I was in bed and woke up with a migraine and then I began experiencing the crackling sounds. I took some migraine medicine called "Maxalt" and it seemed to reduce the crackling somewhat. The reduced crackling may have been a coincidence. Since the first incident, I have experienced the crackling a 5-6 other times. Most of the time, I'm in bed and have just awakened or lied down to relax when the crackling occurred. However, there have been a couple times, that I have experienced the crackling while awake and working on my computer, like tonight. I hope that most of the people's self-diagnosis' on this site are not accurate and this brain crackling is just and odd biological occurrence with no ill repercussions. I wish you all healing!

Hi, it's strange but I get a lot of crackling at times, too. I have had MRI's in the past and they came back normal. When I went to the dentist last time she mentioned I had a SEVERE sinus infection after examining my dental Xrays. Funny thing is I didn't even know it, because there was no pain. When I shake my noggin side by side I can hear it, almost like a bone on bone sound...but I honestly think it is sinus related. I agree with the poster who said drink water and don't worry too much about it. I think I am going to try some oregano oil in case I have a sinus infection, but I am not going to let it worry me too much. I may try a cup of golden rod tea for the first time and hope it works, too. Have a blessed day!
