When you get a headache, serotonin levels drop. This causes the release of neuropeptides, which travel to your meninges, or the brain's outer layer. The blood vessels in that region then become dilated and inflamed, which causes headache pain.

A migraine is a more severe headache, usually resulting in pulsating pain, which often resides in one side of the head. Nausea and vomiting and sensitivity to light and/or sound are the most common symptoms of migraines. These result in a greater severity of the dilation and inflammation of the blood vessels.
