My son had I kidney transplantation. The procedure has taken place two days ago. I have just spoken to the doctor and he suggested Cellcept. My sister had kidney transplantation too, but she was given Azathioprine and she was just fine with it. I told that to my son's doctor but he thinks that Cellcept is better. Any advice?

I am sorry to hear that you had so much traumatic experiences and operations in family. I have been searching a little and I have found some information that may be helpful for you. There are some researches about post transplantation treatment with Cellcept and Azathioprine. The research shows that rejection is significantly lower in those who were taking Cellcept (only 0.9 percent at two years). I dont say that Azathioprine is not good but doctor probably has reason to insist on Cellcept.

I had a kidney transplant in 1994 and have been on Azathioprine the whole time. I'm considering changing to Cellcept because of the skin cancer side affect Azathioprine has. I didn't start having problems with skin cancer until 10 years into it. My doctor has suggested switiching to Cellcept for this reason.
