So far the Drs I have seen have no explanation....just guesses, and I suffer on...as the rest of you do too...and the medical bills keep piling up...i agree it is "not" GERD...as the symptoms are the same, choking, drowning, the GERD attacks at night in combination with the APNEA....for me it can come on any time of day or night....would venture to say they are not the same...

I have this same issue, however, it can happen during the day while awake. Frightening! How can it be sleep apnea if I'm wide awake in the middle of the day?

These spasms are terrible. Had one last night and I was awake. They have happened to me while driving my car in the middle of the day. Laryngospasm yeah just great.

I have this problem too, I don't smoke, don't drink and I'm not overweight. It got worse after I was sick a few months ago, it went from a rare occurrence to 2-3 times a month. It's not whooping cough, I'm not at all sick and it's totally random. You cannot take a lozenge for it because your airway is cut completely off and that would be absurd. You cannot clear your throat either clearing your throat requires air! frustrating.

Wow, I get the same thing all the time!! It's horrible, makes you feel like your gonna die. I'm a smoker and my boyfriend always tells me when this happens to quit smoking , I try and tell him this is not from smoking . I think I'm breathing or swallowing wrong and I start choking on air then saliva and mucus and it becomes stringy and I choke even harder. I've lost control of my bladder before and vomited from coughing so much and so hard. I hate when this happens it's kinda funny cause I bent down to feed my cats about 10 mins ago and this happened to me so I began looking up as to why this happens and here I am now replying to what I've read about it. I don't wish this on anyone.

Hello everyone. I think I may have an answer.. This happened to me twice. Last time it wasn't as bad.. this time.. It's bothering me. I can only think of 3 things this might be. The first.. obviously is anxiety.. which happens to make it worse. I have anxiety and this is just crazy. The second. Allergies..I have just experienced allergies this summer for the first time! I thought I was dying. I look at these comments and they are all over a year old.. so I don't know if people will read this. The third thing is.. something you might have eaten.. I just had an english muffin with peanut butter and it seems like this is the cause to it. The anxiety makes it ten times worse.. I just feel as if my throat is watered and I am drowning and I feel sick. So if anyone sees this, please reply @ my email.

It's called laryngeal spasm. If you will Google it you will see a host of information.

You could simply have acid reflux, very unpleasant but it can be controlled with an over the counter preparation or if you can take them, tablets prescribed by the doctor. It is a simple matter to check for acid reflux, a throat examination. Good luck,

I have the same thing, and just experienced the worst one of my life a few minutes ago. I can tell you one thing, the way your throat closes up is actually an automatic response to the liquid going down the wrong way. It's our bodies way of repelling what has passed through and not allowing any further liquid through. It's an esophageal spasm and that part is completely natural. It will last a few moments and there is literally nothing we can do to stop it, in fact we wouldn't want it to stop so as to prevent further choking. As far as why it happens, I know for me I had a brainstem clot that weakened my throat muscles. I was on a feeding tube for several months. But I was getting these spells long before and long after this happened, so I don't really know.

Your situation sounds the closest to mine. The first time, I actually was sleeping and woke up choking. That is rare though, I am usually awake and it is most often brought on by a tine drop of saliva. I have to be very careful when I am eating, not to laugh or talk while food is still in my mouth. I have pretty bad sinus issues and that is when I am in the most danger. The thing that helps me, when I am actually not congested, is to relax and take as deep a breath as possible through my nose, this seems to relax and open the airway. Often times, like just a little while ago, my nose is completed blocked and this is not an option. I also have had two thyroid surgeries. The last one was like open heart surgery, and there is considerable scar tissue on my esophagus but no doctor has ever seemed to understand these episodes when I have tried inquiring about them. It is so frustrating because I actually feel like I may die each time it happens. I just found an over the counter oral inhaler on line called Asthmanefrin - the reviews are not great but I am considering trying it. Although it does say not to use if you do not have asthma or if you have a thyroid condition. I may try asking my doctor again but it is good to know that I am not alone. Best of luck to you.

This happens to me all the time. I choke for no apparent reason on saliva. I have a hard time taking a breath. My husband sees me go through this and can't help me. This has been happening to me most of my life. I feel that one of these times I won't make it through and I'll choke to death.

Here's how to control it! When you start choking, tap the base of your throat a few times. This will help the muscles to relax. Also, think to yourself "this can only last 30 seconds - not even a minute. I can easily hold my breath for a minute!" Thinking these thoughts will help you not to panic. Doing these two things simultaneously really WORKS!!! i've had this awful coughing/choking thing all my life too but since I have started doing these 2 things, i have not had a choking spell in almost a year! And have definitely stopped several occasions right at the start from developing into a big coughing fit! Try it next time & see!
